Alfresco adventures in the Auvergne? There are all sorts of excellent activities in the area around Le Sheep Inn – including forest hikes, canalside bike rides, river and lake fishing or rural horse riding outings. There are also castles to visit, cute old towns and villages to wander around, lake beaches to swim from, and lots of excellent things to eat…
On site, though, all is calm and relaxed, so you’ll have plenty of time to chill out between your outings and activities – and in gorgeous surroundings too. This small site stretches out over around an acre of quiet rural land and just has a handful of guests staying at any one time, so it always remains nicely peaceful.
The views here are of greenery all around, and they’re surely best admired from the large wooden deck, which looks out over the surrounding countryside and has a firepit to help you keep warm as the sun goes down.
This is a place to relax and reconnect with nature, so there’s no long list of facilities, just the essentials such as compost toilets, a shower, a washing-up area and a shared fridge. You’re also likely to meet the horses and sheep that live on site.
The nearest village is Sainte-Thérence, five minutes’ walk away – it’s a tiny place but it does have a restaurant. For more places to eat and amenities like shops, head to Montluçon, 20 minutes’ drive away.

Local attractions
Getting out to explore the area might take you to the Forêt de Tronçais (50 minutes’ drive) for hikes in one of Europe’s largest oak forests, to the Canal de Berry (20 minutes) for bike rides on a quiet greenway, or to the banks of the Cher River for fishing. You might also like to try the beach area at Étang de Sault (20 minutes) or perhaps take a soothing soak in the thermal baths at Néris-Les-Bains (20 minutes).
Montluçon (20 minutes) is worth a trip to wander through its medieval Old Town, visit the Château des Ducs de Bourbon and check out the excellent MuPop, dedicated to popular music and filled with instruments, listening points and other exhibits. The lovely village of Hérisson (45 minutes) is another good place to visit, or you could try Château d’Ainay-le-Vieil (55 minutes), known as ‘little Carcassonne’ and with guided tours and kids’ activities.
Although it’s a little further away, Le Pal (an hour and 25 minutes) makes a great family day out, with rides, shows and animal encounters to enjoy.
