It's free, quick and easy!
- Small family-run site five minutes from the village of Lembeye
- Half an hour's drive from Pau and 50 minutes from Lourdes
- Walks, cycle routes and fishing lakes within a 15-minute drive
Fancy mountains and fishing lakes, world-class vineyards, castles and pilgrim cities? If the answer is oui, then kindly come on down to Camping Prévert Bellegarde, a family-run gem on a former farm in the Aquitaine region of south-west France.
The site is surrounded by green and peaceful Pyrenean countryside and shaded by ash trees, and is about five minutes’ drive from the village of Lembeye and half an hour from the city of Pau. Facilities include swings for small visitors and a pétanque court for those with a competitive streak. Barbecues and campfires are most welcome.
Lembeye has a supermarket, shops, various eateries and, most importantly in these parts, a winery. There’s more of the same in bigger Maubourguet (25 minutes), which also hosts a lively weekly market (Tuesdays, but check before you make a trek) selling fab local produce. Forage among the farmers for picnic supplies, then nosh it on a walk down the Adour or L'Echez rivers which curve their way around the town.
If your idea of foraging involves more than markets, there’s lake fishing at Castillon and Bassillon-Vauzé, 10 and 15 minutes' drive away. Footpaths and cycle routes take you through cracking countryside to and around Lac de Bassillon, and there are many others crisscrossing the area. Alternatively try the equestrian centre 10 minutes away in Vialer to explore on horseback.

Local attractions
If you're driving, or better still, someone else is driving you a tempting wine route links the local vineyards and wineries from Lembeye in the west to Saint-Mont (30 minutes), Château de Pouey to the east (45 minutes) and up to Aignan, an hour’s drive north; even if you’re not sampling and just steering, the views are five star stuff.
Lake and mountain vistas, plus activities from swimming to standup paddleboarding and simply ambling round the shores are on offer at Lac d’Aignan, an hour away. For a different perspective, zipwire through the treetops in the nearby Parc Acrobatique Forestier d’Aignan.
Napoleon picked Pau (half an hour) as his top holiday destination, and you'll see why after wandering this striking city of palm-lined boulevards backed by Pyrenean peaks. Wander the mile-long boulevard taking in the views while stopping off at the Château de Pau and the fine art museum with works by Degas and Rubens, then finish up in the cool riverside spot of Parc Beaumont.
Equally atmospheric but far busier, Lourdes is under an hour away: despite the crowds, the Sanctuary, with its crypts and vast underground basilica is an unmissable sight. Escape the bustle and beetle over to the Pic du Jer just outside town: hike up this 3,000-foot beauty or take the funicular railway; either way, the views are divine.
