- Leafy Landes family campsite centred around an old mill
- A 10-minute drive to the beach at Contis, with summer shuttle bus
- Well-equipped caravans with access to swimming pool and play area
A ‘vieux moulin’ is indeed what you’ll get at Camping Le Vieux Moulin – this Landes region site is centred around an old mill next to a stream on the edge of the village of Saint-Julien-en-Born. It’s a gorgeously green and leafy setting but a handy one too, with a restaurant and supermarket just over the road and several more places to eat about 15 minutes’ walk away.
This is a fabulous spot for a family holiday, with all sorts of activities nearby (including tennis, horse riding, canoeing, fishing, surfing and miniature golf). A cycle path close by is a useful thing for exploring the area or getting down to the beaches of the Atlantic coast, which is about eight kilometres away. A beach shuttle runs from the site in July and August for even easier journeys.
There are lots of facilities for the family on site too, including a swimming pool (with a paddling pool for the kids), a play area, a pétanque court and table tennis. A launderette, baby changing facilities, wifi service and barbecue area may well come in handy during your stay too.
Accommodation here is in the form of well-equipped static caravans, each of which has its own bathroom, TV, kitchen (with cooker, fridge and microwave) and deck with outdoor seating. They’ve also got air conditioning to help you keep your cool in the height of summer.

Local attractions
There are lots of ways to fill your days with active pursuits around here – perhaps saddling up for a beach ride from a local horse riding centre (15 minutes’ drive), tackling the treetop courses at Là Haut Aventure Park (half an hour), playing miniature golf (half an hour) or heading up to Mimizan (15 minutes) to take surf lessons or hit the waves.
Down at the coast you may simply like to lie on the beach, paddle in the shallows or take a dip, but there are also options for various watersports and some lovely bike rides to be had along the coastal cycle routes. Heading north along the coast, a drive of around an hour and 15 minutes gets you to the popular town of Arcachon and the vast sight of the Dune du Pilat (Europe’s tallest sand dune, no less).
For a bit of town time, make your way to Dax (45 minutes’ drive) to try the thermal waters, or Bayonne (an hour) for some time sampling the town’s ham and chocolates in between museum visits. Alternatively you might like to see what life was like in the 19th century with a visit to the Écomusée de Marquèze (40 minutes).
