  • Family-friendly site in Périgord Noir’s scenic Pays du Châtaignier
  • A five-minute walk from medieval village Villefranche-du-Périgord
  • Restaurant, snack bar, heated swimming pool and paddling pool on site
If, for you, French hols require châteaux, pastries and days spent wandering pretty little villages, then make immediate tracks for Camping La Bastide, a family-friendly site less than 500 metres from the centre of the Dordogne village of Villefranche-du-Périgord in Aquitaine. It’s just five minutes’ walk into the medieval village centre, where wandering along the narrow, occasionally cobbled streets comes highly recommended. There’s plenty to do here too – from restaurants to fishing in the lake around 600 metres from the site to tours at the Maison de la Châtaigne ecomuseum (where you can learn tasty titbits about the history of chestnut wood, classifications of mushrooms and the use of chestnuts in cooking). Those who can’t resist working during their 'break' can make a busy beeline to the village’s co-working space, which has discounted access for guests of La Bastide. Switching off on site might appeal more, though: go for a dip in the heated swimming pool (a paddling pool is on hand for younger guests), laze about on the deckchairs, and distract kids at the playground while grownups cool off with a drink and a bite to eat on the shaded seats near the restaurant. That restaurant (and its snack bar) is open for business whenever the site is, so claim a spot out on the terrace and try out some local eats. A takeaway service makes private dining in temporary homes a real possibility, and fresh bread and pastry delivery every morning (order the day before) means there are easy breakfasts to be had.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Really liked this camp. Very homely and wasn’t too big. Had the pool to ourself one morning. Nice laid out pitches and great little town literally 5-10 minutes walk away.

Disliked: They seemed to have various activities on but it wasn’t made very clear to us what was on and how we could book. Would have liked to have been told about all of this when we arrived.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Great campsite with the most friendly owners who went out of their way to help. We broke down and were welcome to stay until the car was fixed, despite the site closing. Beatrice also helped with translation to get the car fixed and gave us a lift to the vets to help our poorly dog. Thank you camping la bastide.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Very large pitch, excellent welcome from owners very friendly and helpful, gave great advice about the surrounding areas, all facilities exceptionally clean and very well maintained. Bit of a hill to the facilities but with some effort pushing our wheelchair user daughter the facilities were excellent! Would definitely stay again and highly recommend

Disliked: Hills and gravel path, only because we had a wheelchair user with us.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Warm swimming pool

Disliked: Cold showers plus a 7second timer. Lights on a timer so they went off halfway through having a shower and ending up washing in darkness. Owners constantly keeping an eye on us, especially in the swimming pool. Didn't seem to bother anyone else, even though there were lots of other people there. Very unfriendly atmosphere from our neighbors. Next door complained about our children riding their bikes past him as soon as we got there after setting up. We felt like we weren't very welcomed by the other guests or the owner. She came to check we were leaving even though she didn't with anyone else.

Route directions

Some of the roads used by satnavs to direct guests to the site are quite narrow, so if avoiding them is necessary, the following should help. When travelling from the Gourdon direction, travel through Fumel, then Cazals, then Frayssinet-le-Gélat. In Frayssinet, turn right towards Villefranche-du-Périgord. Coming from Cahors, travel along the Bergerac to Rostassac route, continuing straight until Prayssac. In the centre of Prayssac, turn right in the direction of Villefranche-du-Périgord.

Local attractions

Unsurprisingly, given how scenic this part of the Dordogne is, explores hereabouts are well worth the effort. Heading off on two feet is a cinch, with plenty of hiking paths nearby, but clambering into the saddle at Centre Équeste d’Irina (10 minutes’ drive away) or launching a canoe for paddles along the Dordogne itself (25 minutes) are also options for a different angle. However travels are done, point feet, hooves or oars towards some of the stunningly pretty villages within easy reach. Start with the pleasing ochre stone houses of Goujounac, 10 minutes away, before expanding wanders to include Puy-l’Évêque (25 minutes), La Roque-Gageac (40 minutes) and, further afield, the UNESCO-protected Rocamadour (an hour and 15 minutes from base). If it’s châteaux drawing the family to this part of France, no one will leave disappointed. It’s 20 minutes' drive to the vaults, towers and keep of Château de Bonaguil, and between 35 and 45 minutes to the famed (and spectacular) Château des Milandes and Château de Beynac. More of an outdoorsy type? Try the Marqueyssac Gardens, 40 minutes from the site.
