  • Peaceful family-friendly site in the scenic Périgord Noir
  • A 15-minute drive from Domme and 25 minutes from Sarlat-la-Canéda
  • Heated pools, waterslides, bar-restaurant, food shop, themed evenings
In the Dordogne’s scenic Périgord Noir, two kilometres from the pretty village of St-Martial-de-Nabirat, is Camping Le Convivial, a family-friendly site that should suit folk on the lookout for peaceful, culture-filled stays. The sprawling site may be calm, but it’s got plenty to keep the whole family busy too: start by splashing about in the two heated pools, splashing down waterslides or lounging on the deck chairs, then move on to spend evenings dancing, singing karaoke, competing in pétanque or ping pong, or having a kickabout. Sounds like hungry work, non? Handily, there’s a bar-restaurant on site that should have that sorted. Regular themed evenings are hosted by the site, so be sure to keep an eye out for pizza nights, barbecue nights and traditional crêpe evenings with sweet and savoury pancakes served up. Those who simply can’t wait might prefer to handle meals themselves. Barbecues are welcomed on site, and a small food shop should see guests sorted with the essentials. For more local fare, a host of markets in Domme (15 minutes' drive), Sarlat-la-Canéda (25 minutes) and, during high season, Castelnaud-la-Chapelle (20 minutes) are must-visits.

Local attractions

Explores round here have to include wanders among some of the Dordogne’s most pretty towns and villages. Domme, about 15 minutes’ drive from the site, is a good place to start – the 13th-century bastide town, built on a hill overlooking the Dordogne – has stone-buildings, narrow cobbled streets and the largest cave system in the Périgord Noir. Elsewhere, the medieval Sarlat-la-Canéda (25 minutes), the oh-so-scenic riverside La Roque Gageac (15 minutes), the ochre-stoned Goujounac (30 minutes), the hilly Puy l’Évêque (45 minutes) and the cliffside Rocamadour (an hour) should be added to every list. This part of the country is particularly well known for its cave systems too. Interests piqued by those below Domme? Make tracks for the cave paintings at Cougnac (20 minutes), the spectacular ‘Cathedral of Crystal’ at Gouffre de Proumeyssac (40 minutes), the famed Lascaux caves and the cave paintings at Pech Merle (both around 45 minutes). There are plenty of natural wonders above ground too. It’s 35 minutes from the site to the edge of Causses du Quercy Natural Regional Park, for (of course) hikes, bike rides and climbs; the ongoing paleontological dig at Pterosaur beach can be reached in a similar amount of time. Château seekers aren’t by any means left wanting hereabouts either: the châteaux of Milandes, Beynac and Castelnaud are all within 25 minutes, and the stunning Marqueyssac gardens and the medieval Jardin du Barry are both within 20 minutes.
