  • Family site a 20-minute drive from Sarlat-la-Canéda, in the Dordogne
  • Beynac castle five minutes’ drive; Marqueyssac gardens 10 minutes
  • Swimming pools; playground with sports courts; bread delivery and shop
Fortified towns, prehistoric sites and lush valleys – all this (and more besides) is yours to explore in the Périgord Noir region of the Dordogne department, in south-western France. Staying at Camping Le Tiradou puts you right in the heart of this spectacular area: the village of Beynac-et-Cazenac, with its clifftop castle looming over the river Dordogne, is a five-minute drive away, and Sarlat-la-Canéda, renowned for its medieval streets and limestone buildings, 20 minutes away. But before you start exploring the local area, take a little time to settle into your accommodation and get to know the lay of the land at Le Tiradou, where owners Jean-Yves and Patricia will give you a friendly welcome. Highlights on site include the pool area, with plenty of umbrellas and sun loungers to relax on. In addition to their own shallow pool, the kids also have a large playground with a miniature adventure course, a trampoline, a basketball hoop and a volleyball court – in other words, little danger of getting bored here. In the summer, the site also runs organised activities for both young guests (such as the teen party on Thursdays) and grown-ups, or feel free to arrange your own events, such as a family pétanque tournament. The on-site shop sells Périgord specialities, essential items (from foodstuffs to toiletries) and souvenirs; in addition, it’s possible to order (at reception) freshly baked bread and buttery, flaky pastries for breakfast.

Local attractions

The gardens of the Château de Marqueyssac (10 minutes’ drive), which occupy the tip of a rocky spur, are known for their elegant walkways lined with impeccably trimmed boxwood hedges. The Belvedere has splendid views over the river Dordogne, which flows just below, and Périgord villages like Beynac-et-Cazenac and Castelnaud. Anyone fascinated by prehistoric rock art owes it to themselves to visit the Lascaux International Center of Parietal Art (40 minutes). In addition to a full replica of one of the Lascaux Caves (now closed to the public), the complex houses spaces such as a cinema and a gallery where cave art is linked to contemporary works by the likes of Picasso and Miró. When in Bergerac (one hour), look for the two statues dedicated to the town’s most famous fictional export (a certain Cyrano…), stroll through pretty cobbled streets lined with half-timbered buildings, and check out the wineries in the outskirts of the town (mostly in the north east).
