- Luxury yurt retreat in the Dordogne hills
- Spectacular views in a peaceful location
- Handmade yurts with wooden floors, kitchen, bathroom and barbecue
Quirky Camping is a luxury yurt retreat in a secluded spot among the Dordogne hills, on a smallholding in a rural location not far from the small town of Verteillac and an hour’s drive from Bergerac. The site has spectacular views and stunning sunsets, along with excellent stargazing in the clear skies above, and wildlife to spot from the yurt terrace. Dinners can served on your deck by request.
The yurts have been handmade on site using willow from the owners' own plantation. They have sleeping and living space, with polished wooden floors, rugs, sofas, chairs and other carefully restored furniture.
Each yurt retreat has its own well-equipped summer kitchen, dining terrace and barbecue, as well as a solar-powered private bathroom and a separate private compost toilet, all made from local, recycled or reclaimed materials wherever possible.
The large potager can supply you with a vast selection of organic fresh fruit, veg and herbs, the hens supply fresh eggs, the newly adopted bees are busy making honey and there may be the chance of home-reared lamb and pork depending on when you visit – look out for the sausages in particular.
Order a breakfast hamper for the next morning; dinners can be served on your deck by prior arrangement.

Local attractions
Quirky Camping is well placed for plenty of scenic sites in the Dordogne and Charente, including châteaux, prehistoric caves and pretty market towns.
The owners recommend market day in Riberac on Friday or a trip to Villebois Lavalette for their Saturday morning market under an old oak structure: joining in with the locals having oysters and beer is a must.
Plenty of good but affordable restaurants are available locally, with a four or five course lunch costing between 12 and 15 euros, often with wine included. Bergerac is about an hour's drive away for those who want to investigate French wine further, or you could take a day trip to St Emilion (an hour and 45mins) or Bordeaux (two hours). Cognac is another good day out, for tours around the brandy houses and wanders around its shops or along the river.
Plenty of outdoor activities are around too: try canoeing along the river from Brantome to Bordeilles with its fortified châteaux, or exploring the quiet and well-signed local lanes by bike or on foot.
Several river beaches are within easy reach or you could visit Lake Jemaye 40 minutes away, where there’s a beach with canoeing, walks, and bars and restaurants overlooking the waterfront. Poltrot a 15-minute drive into the Charente has scenic picnic spots along the river, nature walks and a labyrinth.
