  • Peaceful wooded site on the banks of the Dordogne river
  • A 10-minute walk from Bergerac's attractions and amenities
  • Fishing, pétanque, playground and bakery on site
Doing the Dordogne? Bag a break at peaceful Camping La Pelouse for a bargain Bergerac base. This splendid spot is in woods on the banks of the Dordogne river, in a convenient location for the town’s amenities (shops, restaurants and an excellent Saturday market among them) and attractions – it’s easy to abandon the car here and head out on foot or bikes to see the half-timbered houses of the historic centre. A short stroll also leads to boarding points for trips on traditional gabarre boats, and trails seeking out the Cyrano de Bergerac statues scattered around the town. Bergerac’s rightly famed as a wine destination too – keen tipplers can learn about their drinks at the wine museum, and take tutored tastings (most handy that you can walk home from these). There's no shame however in skipping straight to the sipping; there are plenty of vineyards and wineries within a half-hour drive that will welcome guests in for a tour and to pick up bottles. Back at the site, there’s plenty of space to chill out, with direct access to the river for fishing or waterside wine quaffing. You may also like to take your glass over to the pétanque court (it helps relax the bowling arm… perhaps) or to the playground while you supervise the small sorts. Shops for snacks to accompany your drinks are easily reachable in town, but you can save yourself an early-morning outing by ordering breakfast bits from the bakery on site.

Power optional grass and earth RV campsite

Liked: As everyone says, fabulous location- can walk across bridge and in Bergerac.

Disliked: I have used much better and cleaner toilets and showers at a festival. The pitches were all waterlogged, there was mud everywhere and the facilities were dirty with lukewarm water, no soap and many lightbulbs out so a shower in the evening was out of the question. Ladies rugby teams also camping meant loud partying until early hours so wasn’t very restful. I understand that the site is by the river and the trees cannot be cut but something needs to be done about the appalling surface of the pitches and the dated facilities.

Liked: Location - easy walk into centre Bergerac.

Disliked: Facilities basic. Unisex without loo seats and paper - not my favourite. Shower was nice and hot though.

Power optional grass and earth tent, travel trailer or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Peaceful site, right on the river - very lovely setting and an easy walk into Bergerac so wonderful in that sense. We only stayed one night on our way home. Campsite was functional - everything we needed was there - we always have an electric hook up for our tent. At the time campsite was mostly full of touring vans and cables overlapped somewhat, but that was fine. Reception was friendly and check in easy. They had a croissant, baguette ordering service for breakfast - lovely! My daughters liked the sink cubicles for changing clothes and skin care regime that were in every campsite we went to - had those here too. Not such a fan of mixed toilets, but was common in France. Plenty of shade, though weather had cooled a little by then, it would have be welcome on hot days.

Disliked: My only reservation here was that the facilities somehow seemed more basic. I don't think they were necessarily, but compared to other campsites we went to, perhaps not as much lighting and a little less modern looking.

Local attractions

Begin your Bergerac break with a trip to the town museum, which houses a collection of wine exhibits. If drinking’s not your only vice, stop by at the Tobacco Museum for an insight into the history of smoking as well. For more wholesome outings, take a trip along the Dordogne on a traditional gabare from the town pier or take a 15-minute drive to hire canoes and power your own paddling. There’s plenty of wine to sip in town, but it’s also worth spending some time taking tours of some of the area’s top wineries – the excellent Château de Monbazillac (10 minutes’ drive) is a good place to start. Those with nippers who aren’t yet of drinking age may instead like to do their castle visits at Château de Lanquais (25 minutes) or Château de Lauzun (35 minutes). Other wine-free days out locally include coming eye to eye with the biggest snake in Europe (a hefty 130 kilograms of serpent, no less) at Zoo de Mescoules (20 minutes) and moseying around the ancient mosaics at Montcaret archaeological site (40 minutes).
