  • Peaceful park halfway between Bergerac and Sarlat
  • Walking and cycle routes and many other activities available nearby
  • Pool, barbecues and local night market
Bikes are offered for hire at Aquitaine's Domaine de la Colombière. And that's certainly a clever move, given all the properly scenic countryside to explore around these parts, such as around nearby town Beaumont, which was on the Tour de France route in 2017. Between Bergerac and Sarlat in the Dordogne's Périgord Noir, the site is in a green and peaceful setting surrounded by pine and oak trees, with lots of cycling and walking trails easily accessed nearby. Fishing, climbing, canoeing, kayaking and swimming are all around too if you want to mix things up a tad. On site, have more relaxed time in the pool or basking by it on one of the sun loungers, before firing up a barbecue for a laidback supper: supplies for the barbie (along with shops, bakeries, patisseries and restaurants) can be sourced at the town of La Bastide de Beaumont du Périgord, which also has a day and night market. Local produce – including foie gras, saffron, duck and goose pâté – is easily available from neighbouring farms, and local crafts for souvenirs from the area's artists and galleries. If you can't be bothered cooking, head to La Bastide de Beaumont du Périgord at night for the best buzz among the market's food, local products and entertainment including orchestra: these are fab and full-on French evenings that you'd be somewhat bonkers to miss.

Local attractions

What a lot there is to do on and below ground around Domaine de la Colombière, from castles like Castelnaud, Beynac, Biron, Monbazillac, Lanquais and Banne, to caves such as Maxange, Proumayssac, Padirac and the world-famed caverns of Lascaux, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famed for its Paleolithic cave paintings. You should also have day trips in Sarlat, home to a big and busy indoor food market, and Bergerac, the city of wine and tobacco: visit the tobacco museum here and take a trip along the wine trails and to the wineries in the city surrounds. Make sure you're around on a Sunday for the market at Issigeac, a huge event during the summer months through the town's medieval streets.
