  • Family campsite with Massif des Vosges views in the Bas-Rhin region
  • Five minutes’ drive to medieval Villé and an hour from Strasbourg
  • Kids’ club and play area on site; skate park and municipal pool nearby
At the foot of the Vosges Massif and crossed by its namesake river, Camping Le Giessen is a smashing base near rural Bassemberg for families looking to explore France’s Bas-Rhin region, whether by car, on two legs, two wheels or on horseback. But there’s never a dull moment if you’d rather stay on site, as sporty activities and night-time entertainments are organised all summer long by a bunch of energetic camp leaders. Mini discos and treasure hunts at kids club keep younger children happy, along with climbing frames, bouncy castles and the Aquatoon splash fountain (high season only). Teens won’t have a chance to get bored and grumpy either, as there’s a skate park less than five minutes’ walk away, with Centre Nautique Aquavallées indoor swimming pool about the same - an outdoor pool opens in summer. Families can take up sports like volleyball or pétanque, making new friends along the way, and evenings are covered with karaoke sessions and quizzes for all ages in the terrace restaurant, plus movie nights under the stars. You may be so busy that you never get to do any local exploring at all.

Power optional grass and earth campsite

Power optional grass and earth campsite

Liked: The local village was nice

Disliked: The campsite was a big let down 1st the toilets were rely dirty and had mold, the showers were even worse in the lady's if you go here definitely remember your shower shoes. The pizza place on site was a complete let down told us half the stuff was off the menu because it was end of season (13th august )eg. Margarita pizza and others only available on Friday This at a campsite geared for kids . When asking questions about what pizzas where available staff talked to me like I was stupid sadly I'm not very good at french and I always apologise for it but I felt very uncomfortable so I left The pitches were all on top of each other. The water park was a complete hazard it was well over capacity and they were still pushing more in ,it was so dirty parts of the roof hanging down ,little kids were getting knocked about by teens the life guards were more interested in talking to each other we stayed for 20 mins and they barely look towards the pool the staff were so rude. It was very high temperatures when we went I went to asked for change of €5 for their vending machine to get water for my 5 year old. they kept saying no aggressively pointing away from the desks I barely even got the question out, even tho they gave a couple of France teens change before me . We booked here because we could not go to Europe Park because of the heat it was hight 30s so thinking they had lots of activities, and made out to be a big holiday camp we booked and definitely regarded our decision. For the extra cost compared to other places, stay somewhere else

Local attractions

If you do manage to tear yourself away from all the fun back at camp, most explorations of the hilly Alsace region start with a drive past vineyards to the lovely town of Colmar (40 minutes’ drive). Stop a while here to take a canal cruise on a flat-bottomed punt and follow cobbled lanes lined with half-timbered houses to the Musée d’Unterlinden, packed full of great European art. Strasbourg (an hour) is another local gem, with a mighty Gothic cathedral, ornate palaces and canal-side strolls. Stop off at Obernai for a tasting of slightly sparkly Alsace whites in wineries, while the hilltop Château du Haut-Kœnigsbour (both half an hour) is open for rampart tours and medieval armoury displays in its museums. Just not that into driving? Have a wander into Villé (20 minutes’ walk) for a meander around its historic city walls. You’re so close to the German border here it seems almost rude not to cross over the Rhine to spend a day hiking in the Black Forest (an hour’s drive).
