- Peaceful site at a 250-acre rural estate 45 minutes' drive from Quito
- Good base for climbing Atacazo; two miles from Pan-American Highway
- Farm tours, horse riding, hikes and other activities available
Take a look at the photos of Hacienda Sierra Alisos and you’ll probably find it hard to believe that this scenic rural spot is only about a 45-minute drive from the centre of Quito (or 35 minutes from the end of its metro line).
It’s true, though – despite the views around here being all mountains and lush greenery, the farm is only a couple of miles from the Pan-American Highway for speedy trips to or from the capital city. That makes this a fabulous place for a quick rural escape from the city, and also means it’s fairly easy to get out to other nature areas like Pasochoa Wildlife Refuge or Cotopaxi National Park (although it's worth noting that the last couple of miles’ drive are on a cobblestoned private road that may not suit all vehicles).
Some guests come here for a peaceful retreat, just soaking up the views from this 250-acre estate and perhaps getting to know farm life a little bit. The owners often run tours and tastings, along with letting guests join seasonal tasks such as bottle-feeding calves.
Others use the place as a base for various adventures including hiking, mountain biking and horse riding – there are several options that can be organised here or you can head out on your own if you're feeling confident.
Whichever you go for, you’ll be staying at a place with lots of heritage, with a traditional adobe manor surrounded by a wildlife-filled forest reserve. Guests have use of a barbecue area, an outdoor kitchen, a launderette, a pétanque court and bathrooms with hot showers. Breakfasts and dinners are available in the main building for an extra charge.

Local attractions
Getting out on foot is a good way to explore, whether you choose a ramble through the farm’s own forest reserve or a more challenging hike up to the summit of Atacazo; the latter takes about 5–6 hours, with plenty of fabulous views along the way.
Farm tours, motorbike tours, horse riding and guided mountain biking activities are also available on the farm – it's best to organise these before arrival so that suitable plans can be put in place.
Heading out and about, you may also like to go looking for flora and fauna in Pasochoa Wildlife Refuge (half an hour's drive), make a circuit of Quilotoa Lake (35 minutes) or head to Cotopaxi National Park (an hour) to see one of the world’s tallest volcanoes. There’s also the option of standing with one foot either side of the Equator at Mitad del Mundo (an hour).
