  • Quiet camping field overlooking forest and vineyards in South Moravia
  • Znojmo a 15-minute drive; Podyjí National Park accessed from the site
  • Grassy motorhome pitches with vineyards, restaurants and shops nearby
A hilltop site with basic facilities, Kemp Znojmo-Konice is in a rural village in South Moravia’s wine country, looking out over sloping vineyards to the walled town of Znojmo. Chances are you’ll be wanting to taste some local wine while you’re here, and many local vineyards are open for guided tours and samplings. You can access Podyjí National Park right from the site; this is a hiking hotspot and protected nature reserve, with the chance (nothing’s guaranteed with wildlife) to see roe deer and wild boar in its forested hills, or otters and black storks along the banks of the Dyje river. You can also explore the park on horseback, fish for trout in the river or go wild swimming too. Cyclists can follow looped trails through the park, stopping off at vineyards and breweries along the way, and the Znovín Scooter Loop Trail is great for kids, with flat routes along quiet roads. There’s bike hire in Znojmo if you’ve left the cycles at home – so there’s no excuse not to get out there. Pick up supplies from the handy stores in Konice village to cook back at base, but there’s no need to cook at all if you don't want to. Venture out for tasty grub in local pubs, or if you fancy a glass or two of local wine with your supper, the cobbled streets of Znojmo Old Town are lined with bars and traditional vaulted restaurants.

Local attractions

Vineyard-hopping is a leisurely sort of pastime, and here you’ll never be short of choice, with wineries in ancient castles and pink-hued monasteries all offering cellar tours and tastings – and then the chance to buy their fine wines (of course) – within a 30-minute drive. As well as being gateway to South Moravia’s wine region, Znojmo (15 minutes) is steeped in culture, with Baroque churches, underground tunnels and a medieval castle to explore. Podyjí National Park (next to the site) has its fair share of history to offer too, at landmarks including the 14th-century New Castle, World War II bunkers and a short section of the Iron Curtain still standing at Čížov, which marked the former Czech border with Austria. Continuing the cultural theme, the mini-city of Brno (an hour) is certainly worth a day’s visit, with its Baroque architecture, massive pointy cathedral and streets full of modern sculptures. Things really ramp up after dark here though, when an impressive nightlife centres on cool pubs in the lively main square.

Primitive cement/asphalt and grass RV campsite

Liked: Such a peaceful site, surrounded by vines, forests and fields. A really helpful host who laid electric cable to the Motorhome, offered his own wine to try and sold essential products from his house. Also helped us on and off the site with his ramps.

Disliked: The entrance causes a 7.2 Motorhome to scrape, so need to wait for the owner to out down ramps so that you can access the site. No waste/toilet disposal facilities.
