  • Peaceful eco-site amid wooded mountains 20 minutes’ drive from San Gil
  • Barichara 25 minutes’ drive; Socorro 45 minutes
  • Dogs welcome; vegetarian restaurant and own-grown coffee; movie bus
Halfway between the activity hub that is San Gil (20 minutes’ drive) and the colonial town of Barichara (25 minutes), surrounded by a spectacular landscape of forested, coffee-producing mountains, is La Pacha Camping. It’s oh-so-peaceful at this family-run site in the Santander department of northern Colombia, with only nature as the soundtrack to your holiday: rustling leaves, chirping birds – and the occasional bleating from the resident goats. Other permanent residents at this small site on a farm include cats and dogs. And with the owners being such animal lovers, it almost goes without saying that your own four-legged friend is a welcome guest too. La Pacha has impeccable eco credentials, with composting toilets, solar showers and recycling points. An organic garden supplies many of the ingredients for the vegetarian fare served at the on-site restaurant – from pasta dishes, to stir-fries and veggie burgers. All washed down with the farm’s own shade-grown coffee, of course. If you prefer to do your own cooking, you’re welcome to use the large farmhouse kitchen. After watching the sunset from the huge sky hammock, the evening continues with a film in the movie bus or with chats and games around the campfire. And during the day? There’s plenty to do both on site – whether hiking the forest trails around the farm, milking the goats, or playing ping pong in the games room – and in the local area, from swimming in natural pools like Balneario Pescaderito (50 minutes) and Pozo El Paraiso (55 minutes), to abseiling down the Cascada Juan Curi waterfall.

Local attractions

If pedalling along a zipwire suspended across a vast, forested chasm is your idea of a good time, check out Parque Extremo El Peñón Guane (10 minutes’ drive), where you can do exactly that. There are also regular ziplines here, plus bungee jumping and other adrenaline-filled activities. Voted ‘the most beautiful village in Colombia’, Barichara sits on the edge of a canyon – which means spectacular views from its several ‘miradors’, or observation decks. Stroll among the well-preserved colonial centre, and stop at the Barichara Paper Workshop to buy handcrafted paper products. Socorro (45 minutes) is another pretty colonial town. Dating from the late 18th century, the Basilica of Our Lady of Help has an elegant interior, with huge chandeliers, stone columns and colourful stained-glass windows. The history of Colombian independence is explored at the House of Culture Horacio Rodríguez Plata.
