  • Stay inside Tayrona National Park, a kilometre from Arenilla beach
  • Accessible via an hour and 20-minute adventure hike through jungle
  • Close to three of Tayrona's most popular sea-view hikes
Up for an adventure on the Caribbean coastline? Then grab your walking shoes: getting to Ecocamping Lui requires trekking for an hour and 20 minutes through leafy rainforest from the Cañaveral entrance of the tiptop Tayrona National Park. Once you arrive at this fab jungle site, the stunning Arenilla beach – one of the only stretches of sand in this pristine park where swimming is allowed – and its restaurants are just a kilometre away. Want to mix things up with a different destination to take a dip? A natural pool is 20 minutes away on foot and the beach at Cabo San Juan takes around 45 minutes to reach. And if you’re not done with dawdling through the biodiverse greenery of this Magdalena park yet, choose one of the three hiking routes to get high up into the foothills of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta for spectacular sea views; the longest one of these takes a little over an hour. Diving trips are also possible in the area – ask at the park about seabed-exploring excursions with food and kit thrown in. Tayrona National Park is accessible via public transport from Santa Marta, the closest city, an hour’s drive away. Handily, given the need to hike to your digs, there’s no need to bring heaps of kit along, as accommodation is in cosy cabins with mattresses and pillows provided. Alfresco meals can be taken at the picnic tables, with plenty of shade from the surrounding tropical vegetation.

Local attractions

What makes Tayrona National Park such a fab destination is the spectacular mix of beaches and tropical rainforest, so it’s highly recommended that guests get a good look at both of these, on sea-view hikes and beach days. Start with a stroll to Arrecifes beach,15 minutes’ walk away, for some gorgeous mountain views and stunning sunsets. Dangerous currents mean that you can’t swim here; for that you’ll want to wander on to Cabo San Juan beach (45 minutes), a swoon-worthy spot where two fine sandy stretches are flanked by swaying palms and clear waters. If that’s given you a taste for jungle hiking, you may like to tackle the famed Ciudad Perdida from nearby Santa Marta (an hour’s drive away). Not up for multi-day treks? Stick around in the city to visit the gold museum and see the colonial quinta where Simon Bolivar lived out his last days. For more on the activity side of things, head to Palomino (55 minutes’ drive) for river tubing, or make for Minca (an hour and 10 minutes) for mountain hikes and tasty tours of coffee plantations and chocolate farms.
