  • Peaceful Ontario park on the edge of Lyndhurst Lake
  • A 10-minute drive from Rock Dunder Hiking Trail; Kingston 40 minutes
  • Secluded cottages surrounded by trees; pike and bass fishing on site
See yourself watching sunsets over a lake or partaking in a spot of fishing at this peaceful Ontario park? Set on a historic canoe route, Redfish Cottages opens up boatloads of possibilities for moseying around a fab four-lake system, with comfortable accommodation where you can rest up before heading out to do it all again tomorrow… Inside, the units have full-sized kitchens (handy when frying up fish from the lake) plus comfy beds and spacious sun porches where you can soak up some morning rays. The site is on the edge of Lyndhurst village, a small and friendly spot with a restaurant, souvenir shop and bait and tackle store. It's a five-minute stroll to most of these amenities, while fresh food shops can be sought out 10 minutes' drive away in Brier Hill or Seeley's Bay. You're welcome to jump aboard one of the canoes and rowing boats moored at Redfish Cottages' dock for free; there's also a swim raft out in the lake that's likely to prove popular in the warmer months. They say that yesterday is history and tomorrow is a mystery, but it's possible to get a handle on what's coming your way if you arrange a tarot reading at your cottage (ask site staff for details). Want to bank up a little good karma beforehand? Take the time to sort the recycling from your landfill waste and you'll be off to a good start.

Local attractions

Lots of outdoor nature spots are a short drive away, so lace up your walking boots and head out to Kendricks Park (five minutes' drive), Rock Dunder Hiking Trail (10 minutes) and Blue Mountain (10 minutes) for views over some of Ontario's most pic-worthy forests, mountains and lakes. This part of Canada may (and quite rightly) strike you as a place to partake in gentler, simpler pleasures: ice cream by the lakes at Charleston Lake Provincial Park (10 minutes), for example, or a cheese-themed factory tour at Forfar Dairy (15 minutes). If you'd rather go for something higher-stakes, there's also a casino down the road in Gananoque (25 minutes). Also high on adrenaline (but, statistically, less likely to burn a hole in your pocket) is Skywood Eco Adventure (35 minutes), an action-packed high ropes trail. Heritage and history fans, meanwhile, will find suitably interesting attractions in Kingston (40 minutes), where you can embark on Victorian prison tours, survey the mighty Fort Henry National Historic Site or find out more about natural history at the Marine Museum of the Great Lakes Region.
