  • Scenic campsite among forested hills in northeastern Bulgaria
  • A 35-minute drive from Shumen, 30 minutes from Pliska’s Great Basilica
  • Café, bar and small shop on site
If a peaceful pastoral spot that's still within easy reach of cities appeals, make immediate tracks for Lisi Vrah Campsite, a family-friendly site in the tiny village of Lisi Vrah, Shumen province. Among hills and forest, and within handy reach of a small lake, this is especially scenic countryside to pass time in. The area’s well oriented for leisurely and pleasant wanders, which is a boon, considering the site is dog friendly – it makes walkies with canine chums an absolute cinch. There’s plenty else to do hereabouts too, and the site team can help guests to arrange horse and cart rides, and fishing excursions. Prefer to make plans solo? Start explores with a trip to Bulgaria’s oldest stud farm, the Kabiuk National Stud (30 minutes’ drive). When hunger (or thirst) strikes, there’s a small café-bar and shop on site and, for more substantial home-cooked fare, it’s about 25 minutes’ drive to the nearest supermarket, where barbecue supplies can be bought.

Liked: John and Tracey were so welcoming and their site was really pretty in an extremely peaceful and scenic location. They made me feel extra welcome by inviting me for dinner as I was on my own and during my stay they made sure to engage with both myself and the other guests. The site had a shop and bar which was extremely convenient, and the bathroom facilities were really nice and clean. There was also an outdoor kitchen although I didn’t use this as I had a gas stove, and wifi which could be accessed in a common seating area.

Disliked: The only small thing was perhaps that one of the shower cubicles didn’t have hooks for your towel/clothes!

Local attractions

There’s plenty to do hereabouts, but Bulgaria’s first capital, Pliska (25 minutes’ drive), ought to be high on everyone’s list. The city (now ruined) was the capital from the seventh century to the ninth, and wanders around the foundations and Great Basilica are highly recommended, as is a stop at the archaeological museum. Continuing south, city days in Shumen will see guests exploring museums and ruined fortresses, visiting a monument to Bulgaria’s 1,300-year history, and engaging in some shopping and socialising. For time in nature, a trip to the famed UNESCO-protected Madara Horseman (35 minutes) is a must before travelling onwards to Shumen Plateau Nature Park, where eagle-eyed visitors will spot deer, tortoises, wild boar, vipers, polecats and woodpeckers, among lots else. Do underground adventures appeal? The site’s about 50 minutes from Zandana caves, and 55 minutes from the Hankrumovski Rock Monastery, a natural cave once called home by a group of monks. If a more urban-centric trip is needed, it’s just an hour and 15 minutes from base to the coastal city of Varna, where – as well as Black Sea beaches – visitors can wander about gardens, drop into museums, visit waterparks and dolphinariums, and explore the zoo. Want to celebrate a successful hol? A 25-minute drive will land guests at Tsarev Brod winery for tours and tastings.
