- Shaded pitches just across the road from sandy Praia de Maresias beach
- Boiçucanga beach 15 minutes’ drive; São Sebastião 35 minutes
- Dogs welcome; communal kitchen; a short walk to shops and restaurants
When only Atlantic breakers will do, it’s time to pack your surfboard and head to Camping e Hostel da Malu. Shaded gravel pitches at this peaceful site in the State of São Paulo are less than 100m (literally just a matter of crossing the 101 road) from Praia de Maresias, a stretch of white-sand beach fringed by lush vegetation and with striking views of the Atlantic Forest in the distance.
Your stay here will likely revolve around beach activities: unfurl your towel and relax as you look out towards the watery horizon, entertained by the antics of daredevil surfers… or join in the action. A word of caution, though: those waves can be pretty formidable, so if you’re here with children, you might want to head towards the far end of the beach and the area known as Canto do Moreira, which is more sheltered and suitable for families.
On days when you want a break from the beach, there are dense patches of forest in the vicinity for a hike (perhaps accompanied by your canine companion): head just inland, to the Cachoeira das Sete Quedas Maresias waterfall (five minutes’ walk), or to Mirante Praia de Maresias (50 minutes on foot) for spectacular views of the São Sebastião Cove.
Back at the site, the kids can catch up on their favourite shows in the TV room while you make dinner in the communal kitchen, having sourced some local produce from the site owners or from the nearby shops – there are several within a 10-minute walk. Similarly, you don’t have to walk very far to come across restaurants serving locally caught seafood and grilled meats.

Local attractions
In Maresias town (10 minutes’ walk), Beco Da Mulher Maravilha is a small alley painted with colourful graffiti of tigers, octopi and abstract designs, plus a mural of Wonder Woman (after which the alley is named). Praça do Surf is a complex with a skate park and a tourist information centre, plus a shop selling handicrafts.
This stretch of Atlantic coastline shelters many splendid beaches, including sandy Boiçucanga (15 minutes’ drive), a popular spot for sunset watching (and backed by a skate park); and Praia da Baleia (half an hour), with calm, shallow waters suitable for families.
The historic centre of São Sebastião (35 minutes) is lined with pastel-coloured colonial buildings, such as the Igreja Matriz church. Multiple piers stretching over the water give you expansive views of the coastline, and from the harbour it’s possible to catch a boat to Ilhabela island, home of the Ilhabela nature reserve.
