  • Dog-friendly site on the river Lesse, near the Forest of Ardennes
  • Rochefort 15 minutes’ drive; Namur 45 minutes
  • Restaurant; pétanque court; wheelchair-friendly access to toilet block
When the doctor recommends a peaceful holiday in a lush green setting (and, of course, you don’t have to wait for doctor’s orders to make your escape…), consider booking a spot at Camping Aux Cailloux, on the outskirts of Han-sur-Lesse (five minutes’ drive, or a 50-minute stroll), in the French-speaking Belgian region of Wallonia. Right on the banks of the river Lesse, this seasonal site is in a prime location to explore the Forest of Ardennes and its many attractions. First among these is the Domain of the Caves of Han, a vast cave network that goes deep into the bowels of the earth – one of its chambers, the vast Weapons Room, sits more than 100 metres underground. But before you lace up your hiking boots, grab the dog leash (four-legged companions are welcome here) and head off exploring the local area, you might want to familiarise yourself with the site, which has grass and gravel pitches with optional electric hook-up (for a daily fee). A toilet block with hot-water showers is available to residents; it’s also worth noting that Camping Aux Cailloux is well suited for guests with mobility issues, since it has step-free access to the bathroom area (which also comes with wide doorways). A pétanque court for family tournaments and a restaurant (plus picnic tables if you would rather eat alfresco) complete the picture. There are more dining options in Han-sur-Lesse and Rochefort (15 minutes).

What customers say

This campsite is being renovated, with upgrades to the toilet block and bar. Guests enjoy the quiet, natural river setting and friendly vibe. Facilities are basic and toilet paper isn't supplied. Renovation work isn't disruptive for most. The site shows future promise, though some felt it wasn't quite ready for full use, citing intermittent WiFi and no dishwashing.

Local attractions

A half-hour hike along the forested paths near the site takes you to the Point de Vue du Rocher à Pic (five minutes’ drive), from where you get spectacular views of the woods of the Ellinchamps nature reserve, which is home to wild orchids, woodpeckers and salamanders. On the outskirts of Saint-Hubert (20 minutes) is the Musée de la Vie rurale en Wallonie, an open-air museum with recreated settings typical of life in Wallonia in times gone by. Deer, foxes and wild boar are among the beasties roaming at Parc à Gibier de Saint-Hubert animal park. Climb up to the citadel for great views of Namur (45 minutes), at the confluence of the rivers Meuse and Sambre. This pretty university town has a cobbled centre lined with cafés and shops. The Musée des arts anciens is home to the Treasure of Oignies, a 13th-century collection of intricately decorated silver artefacts.
