  • Green, dog-friendly site on the banks of the Semois river
  • Just outside of Poupehan village and 20 minutes’ drive from Bouillon
  • Natural riverfront beach on site; playground and ping pong activities
Winding and bending its way around the forests and valleys of southern Belgium, the river Semois sure makes a stunning backdrop for any outdoorsy getaway. That’s certainly the case at Camping d’Houlifontaine, a green, dog-friendly site set on the banks of the river just outside of Poupehan village, 20 minutes’ drive away from the city of Bouillon. What exactly does staying by the river entail, you might ask? Firstly and perhaps most importantly, it means that there is a natural beach on site where guests can paddle whenever they fancy (first thing in the morning to wake yourself up, perhaps, or a quick dip before dinner…). Secondly, it means that you are at an excellent starting point for excursions on foot, by bike or by canoe. Kayaking, fishing, hiking, horse riding, mountain biking and paragliding activities are all a short drive away from the site. In Alle, 15 minutes’ drive away, there is a canoeing and kayaking rental shop, as well as a riverfront recreation area with a playground, more watersports and mini golf. If you’re the type who is always looking for your next meal, there's a convenient set-up at Camping d’Houlifontaine, as it has a café, bar and terrace, as well as an additional chip shop open during high season only. During high season, the site runs entertainment, and when that’s not on, kids can let off steam in the playground or ping pong area.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Nothing

Disliked: Unable to gain clear access due to overgrown tree and shrubs vegetation without risking scratching motorhome roof and sides. Had to reverse up when meeting another from opposite direction. Finally aborted losing deposit for 2 pitches.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: The site is situated in a beautiful area, by the river. The pitches were good size with enough room from your neighbours, and was quiet by 11pm every night. The site also had a bar and resteraunt. The toilets and showers were always clean.

Disliked: There were a few drawbacks. The site does not supply toilet paper and does not have anywhere that supply’s any no shop onsite. The bar is cashless and the staff weren’t very helpfull and like the site, seemed a bit run down.

Power optional grass campsite

Power optional grass campsite

- Onaardig, slecht gemanierd personeel. Slechte behandeling van gasten. - Stroompunt was 50 meter verderop. - Tafeltennistafel - kapot - Volleybalnet - kapot - Geen Wifi op terrein

Local attractions

Here to hike? Go for a warm-up hike in Balade des Échelles (10 minutes’ drive), a forested area with plenty of ups and downs as well as pretty riverfront spots for a picnic. Crêtes de Frahan (10 minutes) is a more challenging uphill hike but all of that sweat is rewarded by a stunning view of the Semois river. There are plenty of gorgeous spots along the Semois, that’s quite apparent, but Bouillon (15 minutes) has to be one of the top spots for many, as it’s home to a riverside medieval castle. Just outside of the city is Musée Ducal (20 minutes), a museum with exhibits on the local history (including folk history and a display of old-fashioned weapons). What other worthy sports along the Semois might you set your sights upon? Vresse-sur-Semois (20 minutes) is very scenic indeed, with its stone bridge and locomotive museum; it's well-liked among painters especially. Herbeumont (35 minutes) is a good stop-off before a hike too; there are 95 kilometres of trails in the surrounding area.
