  • Bushcamp on a working farm five minutes’ drive from Howard
  • Toogoom Beach 20 minutes’ drive; Urangan 35 minutes
  • Dogs welcome; resident goats and miniature horses; wallaby sightings
If you’re hankering after a bush-y, middle-of-nowhere vibe without actually being in the middle of nowhere, you might want to head to Woodlands Farmstay, on the outskirts of Howard (five minutes’ drive or 10 minutes by bike), in eastern Queensland. This family-friendly spot sits just a couple of minutes’ drive off the A1 (Bruce) Highway; this convenience comes at a small cost, which is some noise from passing traffic, but it’s nice to have shops and restaurants within easy access, right? Once on site, you can set up under shade-giving trees across 56 acres of bushland. You will share this vast space with friendly (and eager to be fed and petted) goats, chickens and miniature horses – and with free-roaming wallabies and lots of birdlife. Your canine companion is a welcome guest, just as long as you keep it on a lead while on site. Your dog can then stretch its legs (while still on a lead, though) at Vernon Conservation Park (20 minutes), which is also popular for its mountain-biking trails; and at Wongi State Forest (25 minutes), among fragrant eucalyptus trees. Or you can head to the Fraser Coast, exploring beaches like Toogoom (20 minutes) and Torquay (35 minutes). The site comes with drinking water taps and firepits (wood can be collected for free as needed), and there’s a small playground for when the kids have had enough of petting the resident animals.

Local attractions

As well as vast areas of parkland along the banks of the Mary River, Maryborough (25 minutes’ drive) has a connection to beloved children’s character Mary Poppins: author PL Travers was born here, and her childhood home is now The Story Bank. On the outskirts of town, the Fraser Coast Wildlife Sanctuary has kangaroos, wallabies and dingos. With a pier stretching almost 900 metres into the sea and several sandy beaches, Urangan (35 minutes) is a popular destination. Check out the seafront Reef World Aquarium, or catch a boat to Pelican Bank, a sandbank just off the coast with crystal-clear shallow waters and nesting birds. A visit to the Bundaberg Rum Distillery, with its enormous wooden vats, is de rigueur when in Bundaberg (an hour). If sampling delicious spirits is not your thing, you might want to head instead to the botanical gardens, where you might spot wetland bids such as ibis and egrets. Within the same grounds, Hinkler Hall of Aviation has interactive displays and simulators.
