  • Direct access to rainforest trails, plus activities for all ages
  • Communal firepits, electric barbecues and licensed teahouse on site
If the phrase ‘prehistoric rainforest’ grabs your attention (as well it should…) then you should certainly bung Binna Burra Campground on your travel schedule – this Queensland park is completely surrounded by a splendid 260 square kilometres of forest so pristine it’s got a place on the World Heritage List. That means this is a mighty fine spot for proper rainforest adventures: Lamington National Park’s 160 kilometres of walking tracks leave from just outside the campground, with a variety of lengths and difficulties available. If you don’t feel confident heading out alone then you can sign up for guided walks on site (one of several activities organised by staff here: archery, yoga and kids’ crafts and campfires are also on offer). Bushwalking left you in need of a beer? How very handy that the park’s Lamington Teahouse is fully licensed for your post-hike cool drinks, as well as serving up breakfasts and dinners with stunning views. If you’re planning to embrace the forest life completely by cooking up your own meals, you can avail yourselves of the electric barbecue hotplates provided (although you’ll need to bring your own pans and other kitchen kit) or build a blaze at one of the communal firepits. Firewood, milk and ice can be bought on site; the nearest shop for other supplies is 25 minutes’ drive away, although you may be lucky to catch the market in the local town of Beechmont.

Local attractions

Plan to fill much of your time here hiking along the trails through the Lamington National Park: top routes include the 21-kilometre Border track and the Burra Caves circuit, which takes you to some stunning waterfalls. Staff on site are pretty knowledgeable about the local wildlife, and frequently run guided nature walks for grownups and kids to give insight into the details you might otherwise miss. To add a bit of aquatic activity to the day, you may also like to take a waterside wander at Hinze Dam (40 minutes’ drive) or have a dip in the cool waters of Denham Falls (20 minutes). Sarabah Estate Vineyard and Mount Nathan Winery are about 45 minutes away if you’d prefer to cool down with a drink in hand. If the kids are keen to meet friendly animals as a change from seeking wild ones, take them for a trip to Providence Farm (20 minutes) or Mountview Alpaca Farm (40 minutes). There’s also a whole load of big family attractions (think Sea World and the Warner Brothers Movie World for starters) over in Gold Coast – a whole different world in vibe but only an hour’s drive away.
