  • Hidden campground in the grasslands of Queensland’s McKinlay Shire

  • Artesian baths; bistro terrace; small wildlife rescue area; stargazing
Corella Creek Country Farm Stay describes itself as ‘a breath of fresh air in the camping world’, and if you take a look at the photos, it’s easy to see why. Set in the vast grasslands of McKinlay Shire, in north-western Queensland, this remote site is home to all sorts of animals – from Ziggy the friendly farm Kelpie to the kangaroo and wallaby orphans that live on the owners’ very own small wildlife sanctuary. Outback living in the grasslands can be simple, but there are also luxurious touches for those who like a pampering vibe – treat yourself to a wallow in the artesian water baths for free (and how’s this for a little extra? There are excellent views of the Milky Way from the baths), book an alfresco dinner on the bistro terrace or gather around the campfire after dark for drinks and snacks as you watch the flickering flames. There is also an on-site art gallery, while those who are in a creative mood can discover hidden (or already manifest) talents on a cooking course or craft class. If you’d rather visit a coffee shop or swim a few laps in a pool, the tiny outback town of Julia Creek is a half-hour drive away along the A6. Being pet-friendly, Corella Creek Country Farm Stay has space for dogs to run loose away from the main guest area.

Local attractions

A kronosaurus with its sharp-toothed mouth wide open greets visitors at the Kronosaurus Korner in Richmond (one hour and 10 minutes’ drive). The museum houses a collection of marine fossils, dinosaurs and plants. Take a stroll along the Flinders River or around Fred Tritton Lake, where you can bust out the canoe. Kynuna (one and a half hours) is renowned for its links to the ‘Waltzing Matilda’ song, which was allegedly conceived and written by Banjo Paterson on the outskirts of the town, at the Combo Waterhole Conservation Park. A Waltzing Matilda Memorial marks the entrance to the park. Fans of ‘Crocodile Dundee’ might want to take a drive to the small outback town of McKinlay (one and three quarter hours), where they can have their picture taken (and a refreshing brew, of course) in the bar featured in the Paul Hogan film.
