Taka safari tent (six person)

Liked: Good facilities, very clean bathrooms, great camp kitchen with everything in it. Basic tents. Great campers around to chat with, friendly and sociable.

Disliked: Wasn't impressed with staff having lack of technical knowledge about their facilities, also appeared to us low educated or devoid of basic training/skills in communication, giving us all sorts of childish responses other than what we had asked for.

Local attractions

Shaped by Mother Nature over 200 million years, Carnarvon National Park encompasses a spectacular canyon filled with towering sandstone cliffs, endless tablelands, an abundance of native wildlife and indigenous art sites recognised as some of the finest rock imagery in Australia. Make the Carnarvon Gorge Visitor Centre (five minutes’ drive) your first stop for more information about the region and kangaroo encounters, and try the circular nature path along Carnarvon Creek if you’re travelling with young kids (look out for turtles and platypus in the water). If you’re a keen hiker, go ahead and tackle the Carnarvon Great Walk itself. Allow eight hours for the looped trail, and venture into fern-filled side canyons. Following the Art Gallery Walk off the main route will bring you to Aboriginal rock art left behind by the Bidjara and Karingbal peoples, and featuring brightly coloured stencils of boomerangs and animal tracks plus human hands and feet. For a wild-swimming spot to cool you down, make for the Rock Pool Picnic Area (five minutes), the only place in the national park where swimming is allowed.
