  • Dog-friendly and family-friendly resort on the outskirts of Katherine
  • A 45-minute drive to Nitmiluk National Park; hot springs, five minutes
  • Swimming pool and restaurant on site; local kiosks and eateries nearby
If the sort of holiday where hunting down waterfalls, basking in thermal springs and bushwalking, birdwatching or canoeing is the norm, make Knotts Crossing Resort your next base. With Nitmiluk National Park 45 minutes’ drive to the north, this place is all about outdoorsy adventures and admiring the wildlife without being right out in the outback. This dog-friendly and family-friendly site is a couple of kilometres from the centre of Katherine, which has plenty of its own attractions. First, though, there are the shops, restaurants, clubs and cafés to appreciate, all within around half an hour’s walk of the site. Once you’ve filled your tank, head to the Katherine Hot Springs (five minutes’ drive) to bathe and picnic around natural thermal springs. The guest lobby on site has plenty more information and friendly experienced staff to point you towards gold attractions and activities nearby, whether it’s fishing, four-wheel driving or canoeing in or around Katherine. Up first, perhaps the Edith Falls in the Nitmiluk National Park, 45 minutes’ drive from the site? There’s a splendid plunge pool at the foot of the waterfalls for swimming or snorkelling, and more spring-fed waterfalls and pools in the surrounding area. Maybe Cutta Cutta Caves Nature Park (25 minutes’ drive) to the south too? With orange horseshoe bats, a tropical woodland walk, limestone caves 15 metres below ground and daily tours, there’s plenty to see there. Back at base, the site’s restaurant and a swimming pool surrounded by palm trees lie in wait for you to gather your energy before the next adventure. Other facilities include a food shop, toilet block, wifi and launderette.

Local attractions

Sticking fairly close by, the Katherine river is two minutes’ stroll from the site. Further out is the Katherine Low Level Nature Reserve (10 minutes’ drive) for a paddle, fishing or barbecue, or the 13 spectacular gorges at Katherine Gorge (20 minutes). If it’s history you’re interested in, visit Katherine’s oldest original homestead, Springvale Homestead (15 minutes), or The Katherine Museum (15 minutes’ walk) to learn about the Katherine region. Elsewhere, Top Didj Cultural Experience & Art Gallery (five minutes’ drive) runs a cultural experience led by aboriginal artists. Another excellent experience is the seasonal Marksie's Stockman's Camp Tucker Night (five minutes)… join in with the Aussie humour and tuck into your dinner in the outback. Experiences down south are just as splendid. As well as boat cruises, canoeing, light plane and helicopter flights or trekking, Mataranka (an hour and 10 minutes) is known for Elsey National Park (an hour and 20 minutes), Bitter Springs (an hour and 10 minutes), botanic walks, termite mounds and The Never Never Museum (an hour and 10 minutes).
