  • Cosy cabins overlooking Lago Argentino in El Calafate
  • Excursions to Perito Moreno Glacier, Cerro Frias and local estancias
  • Restaurant and bar with home-cooked food and local wines
Glaciers, lakes and mountains, plus hikes, kayak trips and climbs, with a craft beer at the end of it all… if that sounds like a topnotch combo of things, you’ll fit in well in El Calafate, a jumping off point for many of Patagonia’s most stunning sights (and a hub for restaurants, cafés, cocktail bars and microbreweries in which to refuel and relive the day’s experiences). What with many of the local attractions revolving around ice and snow in some way, it’s a fine idea to have somewhere warm to get back to at the end of your outing. Step forward, Solares del Sur, where the cosy cabins – all built from traditional native cypress wood – look out over gorgeous Lago Argentino, a short stroll from the town centre. Lots of little details have been taken care of here: guests have access to kitchen facilities (with microwave, fridge, utensils and crockery) for sorting picnics and post-outing eats, free wifi for route plotting (and, let’s be honest, bombarding pals with pics), individually adjustable heating and bathrooms kitted out with hairdryers and heated towel rails. As you may possibly have heard, Argentina’s got a pretty good reputation for food and wine – and the closest place for you to try out its wares is the site’s restaurant, which looks out over the lake and opens every evening (except Wednesdays) to serve up home-cooked dishes including lamb and fresh trout, plus glasses of excellent local vino.

Local attractions

There are lots of ways to get out and about to see the spectacular scenery around these parts – if you can’t decide which way would be best for you, have a chat with the staff on site for local advice on boat rides, ice hikes, treks, horse riding and other outings. The biggest attraction around is Perito Moreno glacier, about 60 kilometres away from the town – boat tour and hikes give you a chance to admire the huge slab of blue ice from afar, and there’s also the option of getting into crampons for a hike across the ice. Other popular outings nearby might take you cycling or horse riding to the viewpoint at Cerro Frías hill (20 minutes’ drive), delving underground to see the ancient art at Walichu caves (20 minutes) or to get a taste of traditional gaucho life at Estancia Cristina (10 minutes). Looking a little further afield, there are fossils and age-old rock formations to see at La Leona petrified forest (an hour and 20 minutes), or you can take a journey of a couple of hours to scoot across the Chilean border to the Torres del Paine National Park.
