  • Termas de Reyes 20 minutes’ drive; Potrero de Yala Park half an hour
  • Grass pitches; swimming pool, communal barbecues, restaurant and bar
Set among trees and colourful landscaping in a peaceful mountain valley, Complejo Turístico El Refugio de Yala is a family-friendly site set by the River Yala. It’s just 20 minutes’ drive from the shops and restaurants of San Salvador de Jujuy in rural North West Argentina. Chances are the kids will never be bored here – there’s a play area, big outdoor swimming pool and a sports field where they can play football and volleyball. Other activities on site include fishing on the Rio Grande, and of course you can go hiking (dogs are welcome, so they can join your jaunts) and cycling in the forested hills surrounding the site. When it comes to catering, you have a couple of options. You can spark up one of the public-use barbecues and grill your own supper, or forget the alfresco cooking and head straight for the restaurant serving Argentine and Spanish dishes. Afterwards, plonk yourself on the sun-trap terrace and enjoy a glass of local wine. Practicality-wise, the site has a level, three-hectare field for camping, where facilities include drinking water, showers, a parent-and-baby room and a washing-up area.

Local attractions

The site is surrounded by spectacular wooded valleys crossed with walking trails. You can hike up to Cascada Colorada (an hour and a half on foot), where the water falls in steps down the red-tinged rock face, or drive to Campo Molulo el Chañi (half an hour by car) and then continue on foot to the towering Cascada Campo Molulo (15 minutes’ walk). As well as more hiking options, there are challenging cycling routes in Potrero de Yala Provincial Park (half an hour’s drive); experts can go off-road to reach peaceful Laguna Comedero (35 minutes by bike), or try the winding mountain track to the Abra de Salvear pass (an hour and 15 minutes). If you need a rest after all that exertion, the Termas de Reyes hot springs (20 minutes’ drive) offers a range of massages to ease tired muscles, or you can take a dip in one of the mineral-rich thermal pools and hot springs.
