Shhh… this is a bit of a secret spot. Tucked away in the Jujuy jungle about 20 minutes’ east of Santa Clara is Finca La Fe, a place where you can immerse yourselves in the stunning natural landscapes at an authentic finca where the gauchos live… Out here you’re pretty off the beaten track, but you won’t be left to your own devices when it comes to exploring. Staff on site know the area intimately, and they offer guided jungle hikes, showing you all the local tree species and perhaps throwing in a bit of birdwatching. They also offer a table d’hôte service, cooking meals with fresh local produce, and can introduce you to the authentic Argentine asado barbecue. Your surroundings may be wild but your accommodation is anything but – a luxurious lodge that’s lifted off the ground on stilts to give spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. You can take in those views from comfortable chairs on the terrace, or slope off to bed – you’ll still be able to see it all from the comfort of your queen-size bed. The terrace is also the place of choice to eat the breakfast that’s provided each day, but there’s also seating inside for times when you’d rather stay cosy. Also inside the lodge is an ensuite bathroom with a shower and toilet. And if you fancy a bath? Well, simply stroll outside to your private natural stone tub, where you can soak while also soaking up the scenery.

Local attractions

The Jujuy jungle will no doubt beckon. Answer its siren call by booking a guided hike (four hours) through centuries-old cedars and other hardwood trees all tangled with lianas and ferns. Your well-informed tour leader will help you recognise birdsong and (hopefully) spot tapirs or mountain otters. A gourmet picnic and a wild swim in the pristine river both come as part of the tour. Experienced hikers can trek up through a steep river gorge to the Condor Waterfall (six hours), tackling some canyoning and abseiling as a side option, and possibly (just possibly) seeing birds of prey and elusive pumas along the route. Alternatively try a horse-riding excursion (between three and six hours) following trails through the dense jungle vegetation, stopping off at viewpoints for snack breaks and picnics. No matter what your level of skill, here’s a chance to learn to ride like a gaucho; expert tuition on local Criollo horses is available at the finca too.
