The site

  • Simple, friendly site in the Andes with stunning views of Aconcagua
  • On the edge of Los Penitentes, 10 minutes' drive to Puente del Inca
  • Sociable barbecue meals on site, plus access to small organised tours
You want a scenic location? You got it – Aconcagua Tipi Camp is in the Andes mountains, surrounded by some of the most stunning scenery to be found anywhere in Argentina. As the name suggests, the highlight here is of course Aconcagua, the highest mountain in the Americas at 6961 metres. It towers over the campsite, providing a spectacular backdrop for an open-air stay. Particularly intrepid guests may like to take on the challenge of climbing it (not one for the faint-hearted, that’s for sure…) but admiring the peak from afar or exploring some of the more low-lying trails nearby are equally excellent ways to spend a few days. The scenery may well steal the show somewhat, but there’s more to this place than just its good looks. This small-scale site is a friendly place where you’ll be encouraged to connect with the area’s culture and nature alike. Part of that comes from gathering with fellow guests to spend time sharing sociable meals of local produce cooked over the barbecue, or cosying up by the campfire to gaze up into the glittering starry skies after dark. All are welcome here – families, groups, couples, solo travellers, intrepid dogs – and there are a few handy facilities to make your stay go smoothly, including a fridge-freezer, a wifi service and a toilet block (please note there are no showers on site). Getting here should be fairly straightforward, as the site is just off the main road at Los Penitentes, about an hour’s drive from Uspallata or two and a half hours from Mendoza.

Local attractions

Simply sitting down and staring at the incredible mountain scenery around you is a perfectly acceptable way to spend some time here, but if you’d like to get out for a closer look there are numerous ways to do that. One of the easiest ways to do that is to join activities organised by the site’s staff – they’re able to organise things like guided hikes along hidden trails, history tours full of Andean stories and other experiences that will help you connect with this special place. Another easy option is to stroll along to Los Penitentes, a couple of minutes' walk away – it’s a popular ski resort in winter but in summer has options for horse riding, climbing, fishing and other outdoor adventures. Going it alone, you may like to take a trip to Puente del Inca (10 minutes' drive), a gorgeously colourful natural stone arch over the Las Cuevas river, hike through the wild scenery of Quebrada de Matienzo (20 minutes) or follow the trail to the sacred Christ the Redeemer of the Andes viewpoint (40 minutes).
