Heading to Wales for spectacular coastal strolls or mountain hikes? You’ve hit the right spot at Cynefin Farm, a small glampsite tucked between the Preseli Hills and sandy beaches in the north of Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. Surrounded by ancient oak forest, this peaceful seven-acre site is at a long-abandoned garden centre that’s slowly being restored and turned into a permaculture education project. Thousands of trees have been planted, and fruit and veg are grown in the glasshouses next to the garden pond. After years of re-wilding, the land sings to the incredible sound of birdsong, with owls and foxes often seen flitting through the trees and undergrowth. There’s also a bunch of friendly ponies for you and the kids to meet and greet, along with ducks and hens. Luxury accommodation is in stylish bell tents, festooned with fairy lights, adorned with wildflowers and kept warm by woodburning stoves. They’re furnished with comfortable double beds (extra beds can be added to sleep up to four guests), storage space and rugs to cosy things up. Outside each one is a firepit for barbecuing and cuddling up around on summer nights, and each tent also has its own well-equipped kitchen. There’s also a pristine shared bathroom with a hot shower.

Hawthorn bell tent

Liked: Beautiful surroundings. Gorgeous layout. Comfortable bed. Cosy bedding and extra blankets. Relaxing atmosphere. Kitchen was well equipped and very clean. Bathroom was clean and tidy. Communication with hosts was very good - prior to arriving. Helpful, kind and caring host whilst we were there (Nim's Mum). Perfect spot to complete my self Reiki whilst listening to nature.

Chestnut bell tent

Liked: The peace and quiet was lovely with only one other bell tent on site. We used the outdoor firepit with wood and kindling provided. The outdoor kitchen was well equipped and clean. The bathroom and shower was clean and modern. The wood burner in the tent kept it warm. Our host was lovely and friendly.

Local attractions

When the Pembrokeshire coastline beckons, try Newport Sands Beach (10 minutes’ drive) for paddling, swimming and kite-flying. Other options nearby include the little cove backed by a waterfall at Aberfforest (15 minutes), or you can take the kids rock-pooling at pebbly Ceibwr (10 minutes). Up the activity levels by discovering sea stacks and caves along the rugged coastline on kayak and canoe jaunts, keeping an eye out for seals as you paddle. Surfers can head for Poppit Sands Beach (20 minutes) to catch rideable waves. If you’re more into hiking than messing about on the water, access the truly spectacular Pembrokeshire Coast Path at Newport Cliffs (10 minutes) for days of walking with spectacular views from the clifftops. Inland, there are more strolls among the moss-drenched oak woods of Tŷ Canol National Nature Reserve (20 minutes), or you could scramble up to Pentre Ifan Burial Chamber and Waun Mawn Standing Stones (both also 20 minutes) in the Preseli Hills.
