  • Peaceful site in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park
  • A 10-minute drive from Pembroke; 25 minutes from Tenby
  • Firepits and barbecues allowed; dogs and families welcome
'Easy to get to but difficult to leave' is how the folk who own Parke Farm Camping describe the place – have a quick look at a map and the site pics and you'll see exactly where they're coming from. Sandy beaches for swimmers, surfers and coast path ramblers are within a few miles of this pretty Pembrokeshire site – which, by the way, is located within the gorgeous surrounds of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. For town times, historic Pembroke – where there's a railway station, supermarket, pubs and other amenities – is 10 minutes away by car. Those keen on surveying the local seascapes will probably be pleased to know that most of the 186 miles of Pembrokeshire’s coast path are within a similarly accessible distance. Life on site is all quite laidback – families and dogs are welcome (although there's an adults-only area that you can request if you'd prefer a bit of quiet time with your beloved), and there's no problem lighting up firepits and barbecues. Various amenities are on hand to help life run smoothly, including free wifi, a washing-up area, showers and toilets, and there's plenty of space around the place to relax and take in the fresh air. Please note that some sections of the local coast path may be closed when the local MOD firing range is in use. Usually, this is outside of bank holidays, school holidays and weekends, but check online in advance if you want to be sure of access.

Liked: The pitches are large so you don’t feel crammed in (although there was no more than 4 people there while we stayed). The location was mostly really peaceful. There is a military cars right next door so the first night there was heavy gunfire until around 22:00. Free tea and coffee on in the mornings

Disliked: The facilities were dirty, they clearly had not been cleaned in a while and weren’t cleaned during our entire stay. There are only 4 showers, 3 of which are tiny. I assume when the site is busy you would have to wait for a shower. The other toilets are unlit and doors didn’t lock. This was the most I have ever paid for a campsite and the price does not reflect the site, I wouldn’t stay again purely based on the facilities. There is WiFi but you only get 2 free 1 hour sessions.

Liked: Quiet and peaceful site. Easy to find and lots of care and attention paid to getting the right pitch for us. Clean, multiple toilets and showers. Lots of hot water for washing up. The little shop in the caravan was a great bonus. Really nice gesture with tea and coffee in the morning and marshmallows in the night. Will definitely be back again.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike. Mobile phone reception is a bit poor but we didn’t need it anyway

Liked: We had a wonderful Bank Holiday weekend here, the owners were so welcoming, and we loved the Marshmallows in the evening on the little fire pits each pitch had. The pitches were really spacious and well maintained, the facilities were brilliant and clean and showers were lovely. 2 hours of free wifi per day, although we had plenty of signal so didn't need it. The little shop on site was well stocked. Can't find a fault with it (except the proximity to the Army training baracks when Sergeant Shouty started up at 6am on Saturday).

Liked: Thoroughly enjoyed our weekend here. Sone of the party were first time campers, loved it, said that the campsite would be one we will come back to regularly. Nice size pitch that took a large tent two cars and still plenty of room for children to play games. Score for wifi low as the signal could be poor, but not a bad thing with 2 teenage boys who need time off their phones! People came around in evenings with marshmallows and coffee/tea was available.

Liked: Peaceful site spread across a few fields, each with pitches mown into the long grass, which gave each pitch a lovely enclosed feel and a little extra privacy. Really nice touch. The offer of free marshmallows each night and tea each morning was also lovely. The facilities on site were kept really clean and tidy. The location was excellent for local beaches and attractions. The owners were always available, friendly and helpful and their little shop stocked the essentials should you need them. No real dislikes but a couple of things to note: There was free WiFi but it was limited to two separate one hour sessions each day. Outside of that it was £3/hour. The photos show the shop located inside the beautiful old house whereas on our stay it was in a caravan next to the entrance.

Local attractions

Tenby (25 minutes' drive), a firm favourite for beachgoing folk, is within easy reach, but quieter, lesser-known sands like Broadhaven South beach (10 minutes) should also be on the itinerary – at this latter spot there's ample opportunity for swimming and sunbathing, or for more active times like canoeing and angling. If you can pull yourself away from the coast for a couple of hours, the rewards are rich indeed. Head for freshwater frolics at Bosherston lily ponds (five minutes' drive), a spectacular National Trust-managed stretch of land with dunes, footpaths and pools where otters dwell. While you're likely to see a lot of wildlife while strolling around, spotting more exotic critters might require a trip to Manor House Wildlife Park (20 minutes). Also inland is Lamphey Bishop's Palace (15 minutes), a ruined ecclesiastical mansion where prelates of yore lived in sumptuous surrounds. And as you'll gather while driving around, historic buildings aren't in short supply around here. Also top of the list are Pembroke Castle (10 minutes), where you can admire tall turrets while cruising by in a rowing boat, and Manorbier Castle (25 minutes), a Norman landmark notable for its gardens, dovecote and watermill.
