After spending all day strolling along the Pembrokeshire Coast Path and stopping for snacks or a sea dip along the way, it should be quite splendid indeed returning to Penstrumbly Camping for sea views and the wild westerly breeze. Set right on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, the camping pitches are just off the road in Pwll Deri and come with no-frills facilities including a composting toilet and a tap with mains water. Upon your arrival, pitch up your tent (with an extra peg or two as it can get blustery on the Pembrokeshire coast) and perhaps pop a bottle to raise a cheers to the good views. If you're feeling energetic, you could walk up the path to the top of historic Garn Fawr, a volcanic hill with an Iron Age hillfort, also used as a World War I lookout. From this point, views stretch over to Strumble Head and northwards towards the St Davids peninsula. Along the coastal path, remember to watch out for the seabirds such as chough and wildflowers such as sea campion and pink sea thrift on the clifftops at Pwll Deri and Pwllcrochan. In September and October, grey seals birth pups on these peaceful coves. Further away along the coastal path, it's possible to reach gorgeous spots such as Strumble Head Lighthouse (northwards) and the beaches at Abermawr and Aber Bâch (both southwards). For supplies shopping, Penstrumbly Camping is a 10-minute drive from Goodwick’s shop and petrol station. In Fishguard, 15 minutes’ drive away, there are bigger shops and excellent pubs with food and live music.

Local attractions

After a day of lounging around on Aber Bâch (10 minutes’ drive) beach, stroll into Melin Tregwynt (10 minutes) for a cup of tea and cake in the café of a working 17th-century woollen mill. Whether you want to take home a woolly blanket, watch the looms or just want a refreshment, it’s a splendid little spot with a bit of history. Historic St Davids (25 minutes), the smallest city in the United Kingdom, is up north of the site. Its cathedral, shops and pub grub should fill an afternoon very nicely, especially if you like to combine history with some stunning food. If you’re picking a beach day, you have a lot of different options, from surfing havens like Newgale (25 minutes) and Whitesands (half an hour) to Abereiddy's (25 minutes) black sand and fossils, just around the corner from the famed Blue Lagoon. Newport Sands (40 minutes) and Pwllgwaelod beach (half an hour) are some other fine options for a day of wading in the shallows or rummaging around rockpools.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Location. Beautiful views in every direction.
Handy for the coastal path and a nice walk to stumble head lighthouse.
Very friendly and accommodating staff.
Facilities were exactly described. Does have added bonus of plenty of phone signal on the site.
Great stop over place for those walking the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path.
