  • Simple pitches with a warm welcome at a Pembrokeshire rugby club
  • A 10-minute walk from the centre of St Davids
  • Clubhouse on site for food and drink; dogs and kids welcome
Wales is famously a nation that loves its rugby – so what could be more fitting than staying right on site at a Pembrokeshire rugby club? Don’t worry, you won’t have to get involved in any scrums when staying at St Davids Rugby Club as the (camping) pitches are well away from the (rugby) pitches. What you will be doing by staying here is helping to support Wales’ most westerly club, with profits from the campsite going towards keeping the game running in the UK’s smallest city. The folk that run the site are keen motorhomers themselves, so they’ve got a good idea of what guests want and need from their stay. That means that, although these pitches are necessarily fairly simple in style, they’re safe and flat and you’ll have access to lots of useful facilities including showers, toilets, fresh water and wifi. You’ll also be most welcome to join the locals at the clubhouse, which has a pool table and dartboard as well as serving a good range of food and drinks. (Pint of beer that helps support a community enterprise? Be rude not to…) The club’s location is a fantastic one for exploring this part of Pembrokeshire, too. You’ll be able to walk into the centre of St Davids in about 10 minutes for shops, places to eat and attractions like the cathedral and Bishop’s Palace. Coastal favourites like Solva, Porthclais and Whitesands beach are all nearby – and if you need any tips on places to go, you’ll be in the right place to ask a local.

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked: Convenience of the pitch to St David’s centre which was 5 mins Two beautiful beaches within walking distance although Whitesands does not accept dogs. Lovely views from our door A great training session from the club Small and very quiet pitch Club is open for d Snacks and drinks Wednesday and weekends

Disliked: Only very small dislike, there is only one bathroom to share across the site. If you arrive and no one is around just pitch up and pay over the phone, someone will answer😊 and they are very friendly and helpful.

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked: Great cost and ideal location. Definitely recommend. Quiet

Disliked: 1 shower and toilet but we knew this before booking. Campsite wasn’t busy so no issues with waiting. Toilet/shower facilities would be nice to be cleaned and restocked with toilet paper and tissue paper for hands on a regular basis

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked: Price was good at £17 compared to other options. Remember it’s a rugby club not a fully equipped camp site. Free access to a toilet/shower and an outdoor tap. Toilet and shower in same room which is not an issue when site not busy. Grass site at side of rugby pitch was level and firm despite recent rain. Some bigger vans remained in car park due to those concerns, but probably not possible when rugby club is in use. Only 1min walk to toilet. Lovely countryside views and only 10in walk to town and supermarket opposite which is children’s playground.

Disliked: We arrived on Tuesday and were a bit confused as there was no one there. However a friendly helpful man who was doing some work there said the couple that run it are off Monday/Tuesdays so club closed. We paid him and he passed money on. A communication glitch with their mobile phone also meant we couldn’t contact them. But other campers there were able to give access to the toilet/shower which is coded. Managers apologised via text, but we never met as we left early on Wednesday morning.

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked: Fantastic bagels on site! Great shower. Good location, flat site, 15 - 20 minutes from the center of St. David's. Facilities not all as advertised as the site had new owners but this didn't affect the stay & owners reduced the price

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Very close to town, shower and toilet very clean and well maintained. Craig was extremely helpful. Lovely skate park and obstacle course for the kids

Disliked: The clubhouse was only open on the weekends (we stayed mon-friday during the summer holidays) would have been nice if it was also open through the week even if just for the evening. There was no wi-fi as advertised

Local attractions

Start your stay with a little stroll around St Davids, visiting the cathedral, Bishop’s Palace and Oriel y Parc gallery, before heading out of town on a path to Caerfai beach or Whitesands Bay. The latter is a well-known surf location, so you may prefer to drive there (five minutes' drive) if you’ve got boards with you. Walks on the Wales Coast Path are highly recommended, of course – perhaps along to St Non’s Chapel, to the little harbour at Porthclais or all the way along to the pretty village of Solva (10 minutes' drive). Heading north, Porthgain and the Blue Lagoon at Abereiddy (both 10 minutes) are also popular spots. This stretch of coast also attracts a whole lot of wildlife, and the best way to see some of that is on a boat trip to Ramsey Island, which you can organise from St Davids. Back on dry land, kids may well be intrigued by a trip to Dr Beynon’s Bug Farm (three minutes’ drive).
