  • Small family-run farm site with alpacas and chickens
  • A five-minute drive to Newgale beach; 15 minutes to Solva
  • Alpaca walks, free-range eggs, soft drinks and snacks available
Here’s a place where you’re likely to be singing home about the furry alpacas, the sweet countryside views and days out in the wilds of Pembrokeshire. Sweet Home Alpaca is an eco-friendly farm site with 32 alpacas, 30 chickens, two dogs and two cats. As the farm’s newest residents, you’ll be in a top spot for getting back to basics and appreciating the Pembrokeshire scenery. The simple, well-presented farm field pitches are super laidback and relaxed, so there’s plenty of chilling out on the itinerary. Small and family-run, relaxation is high on the list of priorities for this base, but of course, the rural surroundings are ripe and ready for exploration and adventurous types will be pleased to find the surf mecca of Newgale beach five minutes’ drive away. What makes this such a great base? Well, the site can set up alpaca walks or meet and greets. Watersports, whale watching and coasteering are all a short drive away. You might see bats, birds or Philly the pheasant too (remember, this is a working farm, so you’re sure to hear the odd animal sound from time to time). Barbecues and firepits are also welcome (off the ground, please). The pitches are level, generously-sized and placed on the field edges, so there’s plenty of room for kids to play around. There are basic but well looked-after creature comforts, including a launderette with a washing machine and tumble dryer, fridge and freezer facilities, a shower, composting toilets and a washing up area. Free-range eggs, soft drinks and snacks are available on site, but if you need extra supplies, there’s a small food shop five minutes’ drive away. There are bigger shops, cafés, pubs, a leisure centre and a medieval priory in Haverfordwest, 15 minutes’ drive away. That should be plenty of fuel for hikes, bike rides and other countryside or coast excursions.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: If you're after wild camping this is the place to go! Fantastic scenery and views, Angela couldn't have been nicer, we had some personal issues while we were there and she was fantastic. Very quiet and peaceful. Only one other family there when we arrived and we had a choice of where we would like to pitch. Great value for money.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: We had a fabulous few days at Sweet Home Alapaca with walking the Alapacas themselves being the highlight. The site was clean and easy with a basic but practical compost toilet and shower. The owners could not have been more friendly and helpful and dealt promptly with any issues we had. It was an ideal base from which to foray out to discover other parts of Pembrokeshire. This is a very simple site and not expensive. It was everything we expected it to be and we had everything we needed.

From the manager: Your review not only brought me to tears but will also significantly impact our family-run campsite business. In your review, you mentioned dissatisfaction with the location. It is important to note that our site is clearly listed as a working farm in a rural area, and we encourage potential visitors to check the location on Google Maps prior to booking. It is beyond our capacity to alter the location of the farm itself. You also rated our accommodation poorly, stating it deserved one star despite bringing your own tents. This rating seems unfair as the assessment should ideally reflect the on-site facilities, which include showers, a shop, a tumble dryer, a washing machine, and a fridge freezer. Regarding child-friendliness, we believe our open fields provide a safe and enjoyable space for children. We are always open to suggestions on how to further improve, but introducing additional activities would likely necessitate a price increase, something we aim to avoid keeping our rates affordable. You should have come and had a chat with us, and we would have been happy to accommodate you. Despite activities not being listed on our advertisement on Pitch Up, you gave us a one star. The ‘Pitch up’ site states we have compost toilets. If you were not happy to use a compost toilet, perhaps you should have booked elsewhere. It's disappointing to note you did not approach us with any concerns during your stay, despite the customer service being 5 star, you still did not approach us. We take pride in our five-star customer service and are readily available to address any issues promptly. On Monday morning, we even went to offer your group a complimentary alpaca walk to apologize for any inconvenience caused by the non-functioning shower, but you had already departed by the time we arrived. As a small business, we do not receive the full £20 a night balance that you pay. We have to pay to advertise and then Pitch Up take their commission plus then Stripe takes an additional payment. Which means we only really get about £13 for two people per night. Ratings like yours jeopardize our fledgling business, which my husband and I are striving to grow. Your four-star rating out of ten feels unduly harsh and has hurt our prospects significantly. While we understand everyone is entitled to their opinion, we request a bit more consideration and perhaps a discussion of issues privately before publicizing them in reviews, as it can dramatically affect small businesses like ours. We work tirelessly to make sure our guests have a positive experience, and a conversation could have easily resolved any of your concerns.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Friendly. Welcoming. Lovely animals. Lovely family. Beautiful scenery. Idyllic. Tranquil. Clean. Spacious. It does exactly what it says on the tin. Clean tidy and friendly. Compost loo and no showers but leisure centre less than 10 min drive. Went out of their way to be hospitable. Absolutely stunning views and absolutely recommend the meet and greet or alpaca walk!

Local attractions

Beaches, coastal walks, theme parks and ancient castles – that’s just a preview of what’s around Pembrokeshire. There are watersports on Llys-y-fran Reservoir (half an hour’s drive) and, of course, at the many local beaches. Just toss a coin between Broad Haven beach (15 minutes), Druidston Haven (10 minutes), Little Haven (20 minutes) and Solva (15 minutes). You might be quite the animal fan if you’ve chosen to stay at Sweet Home Alpaca. Handily enough, there’s another animal attraction within driving distance of the site. Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo (35 minutes) has a mix of rides and animals (kids should be quite well-entertained). It’s one of a bunch of family-friendly attractions in the area. Others include Oakwood Theme Park (half an hour), Bluestone Resort (25 minutes), Heatherton World of Activities (40 minutes).
