Views around the site

  • Peaceful Pembrokeshire site with stables five mins' drive from Solva
  • A 10-minute drive from St Davids, Newgale and Pembrokeshire Coast Path
  • Bring your horse and hack to the beach
Giddy up and get down to this splendid spot on the Pembrokeshire coast. They're fond of horses at Birtwick Park: it's an equestrian smallholding where you can stay under the stars while your horse friend has a comfortable night in the stables. It's not obligatory to bring an equestrian accomplice of course; everyone is welcome (including well-behaved dogs) to come and enjoy the views of the hills and the coast on this green and peaceful site, five minutes' drive from the little harbour at Solva. Stargazers and birdwatchers should be particularly happy here, as the night skies are massive and clear while pheasants and barn owls make themselves heard around the fields. Gazing down to the ground for practicalities, you can park where you stay and borrow firepits for sizzling your bangers on; if you don't fancy cowboy cooking Solva has many fine pubs with hot grub and shops for stocking up. Solva is also where walkers can join the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, 680 miles of fine terrain encountering castles, moorlands and weathered cliffs teeming with wildlife. Try a modest section walking round to Newgale beach, with a paddle and pint among the surfers as your just reward.

Liked: Where to start, received an email from the owner before arriving at the site, explaining her personal trials at present and why she is not always available to greet and welcolme her visitors. This was appreciated, and I wish her well for the future. Unfortunately, the site does need a lot of work to bring it up to an acceptable standard. Cosmetically needs a good tidying up. A new gate at the entrance would help. Passing other camp sites locally (in the car), I could not see any real difference to the amenities offered here than them, not that I went in or looked at others, booked online. For the cost per night, it was fine. It suited our visit to Pembrokeshire. We were not on a holiday as such, but visiting family in the area and staying for 3 nights. We had 4 children who enjoyed being able to run around and fly a kite without being told not to go close to the next caravan, very quiet only 3 tents and 2 caravans. They enjoyed feeding the horses, shame they couldn't do more with them. The ground was suitable for us with no pot holes or horse holes as previously I had read, and flat area for the caravan. I was pleased we were up on number 10 plot as we had a little shelter from the Gale force winds last night! Reading that firepits available for a cost was wrong as unfortunately very rusty fire pits left at all plots. No signs re logs or fire lighters seen. No reception seen.

Disliked: We didn't dislike anything, wrong heading. As above for improvements. I agree with past feed back, the showers need looking at for the time they run on hot water. Pressing a button I can see saves money, but it is very annoying. Little improvements such as painting the radiator would give a more visual welcolme and not cost much just time. The toilet block just needs some TLC. During our time, the toilets were clean, and the floor was dry. Husband said the grass needs cutting. The hand washing soap needed replacing a simple but essential health and safety procedure. Maybe daily checking of basic needs would help. As above re the gate before someone gets injured this needs immediate action, nails can cause a serious cut, and the owner will be held responsible again a health and safety issue. Would we stay here again? If the essential improvements were made than yes. But....I do not see this site open for much longer if the reviews don't improve. Which is a shame, could be a great site, but unfortunately money does need to be spent and help to maintain it. Would I recommend....dont know.... Stay again......dont know I have ticked no ....not without some work being carried out. But yes if it improves

Liked: We loved Britwick Park. Huge Pitch with 16amp hookup! Our tent is huge and we have a gazebo and trailer as well as a 4x4 and they all fit on the XL pitch with room to spare. Lovely outlook, quiet and calming. Plenty of space for the kids to run about and play. Field adjacent to the pitches has beautiful horses that are very friendly and it was a treat to be able to engage with them! The kids especially loved this! Facilities are great, clean toilet block, hot showers everytime, washup area is perfectly adequate, elsan point & water supply all perfect. The owner Jayne made it clear that she may not be around due to working long hours during the week however we did get to chat to her halfway through the our holiday which was lovely. All in all a great site, ideal for a long getaway (We stayed 14 days having added 3 extra nights as we didnt want to leave) quiet, clean and efficient site. Rural location but close enough for pubs, shops and site seeing all a short drive away. Newgale beach is a must visit!

Liked: Very nice stay. All you could ask for was there, clean toilets and showers and 2 washing up sinks. Loved the ponies in the field opposite our tents. Left early as the weather was not kind to us. But that’s no fault to the camping site.

Disliked: Weather.

Local attractions

Two splendid Pembrokeshire seaside spots are within five minutes' drive: the fab surf beach of Newgale, a spectacular two-mile stretch edged by an enormous pebble bank, and Solva, home to a scenic harbour with shops, pubs and kayak and canoe hire. There are plenty of picnic places at both, particularly at Newgale where the solitary-minded can stroll all the way down to the beach's southern end and through a cave to a cluster of sheltered bays. Another Pembrokeshire must-see is tiny St Davids, the smallest city in the UK. Have a day here to see its famed cathedral founded in the sixth century and the 13th-century Bishops Palace next door, then book a boat trip to fab Ramsay Island for seal spotting and birdwatching. If you still yearn for sea and surf, one of the most acclaimed surfing beaches in Pembrokeshire, Whitesands Bay, is a couple of miles to the west of St Davids. Pembrokeshire's three theme parks are within easy day trip distance too: Oakwood Theme Park is 40 minutes' drive away, Folly Farm 45 and Heatherton within 50.
