  • Friendly farm stay on a smallholding 2.5 miles from Laugharne
  • 15 minutes from spectacular Carmarthenshire/Pembrokeshire beaches
  • Stargazing haven with campfires allowed
You'll certainly want to wax lyrical when you arive at this lush little site. Two and a half miles from Dylan Thomas's house at Laugharne, Big Barn Camping is a cracking Carmarthenshire site in a wildlife haven where red kites and other birds of prey regularly soar overhead. There's stacks of space to stroll about here: the site is on a Georgian farm covering 36 acres of meadows and woodland (and home to sheep, pigs, alpacas, goats, chickens and waterfowl to say hi to during your stay). The views are splendid, looking out over the countryside by day and stars aplenty at night against the flames of your fire; Big Barn is in a stargazing haven and campfires are allowed. Off site, it's two and a half miles or under 10 minutes' drive to the coastal town of Laugharne, famed as the final home of Dylan Thomas, 15 minutes to Pendine Sands and 20 to Carmarthen; it's also within 20 minutes of Pembrokeshire beaches at Amroth and Saundersfoot. Walks around Laugharne and the estuary of the River Taf are popular picks for local wanders. The site is eco friendly, using solar power, compost toilets and full recycling. It's part of the Greener Camping Club Association; customers that are currently non-members can sign up when booking and a tree will be planted for you, as well as giving you access to over 150 other GCC sites.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite (pet friendly)

Liked: Layout of pitches were spacious and clear. It was clear that the site’s goal was for campers enjoyment and not just a money making scheme. Our host was lovely, kind and respectful and there were a few little touches that go a long way (baby and feminine sanitary products stocked at an on site market). Shower block was lovely and it was amazing to have a bit of luxury whilst out camping.

Disliked: N/A.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite (pet friendly)

Liked: Clean, sheltered and quiet site. Owner Michael was helpful and friendly which was great. Showers were hot and hot water to wash up and for wash basins. Each pitch had a picnic table and a fire pit which was a really nice touch. The sheep were cute too. Highly recommend

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite (pet friendly)

Liked: Lovely site. Owner was very friendly, welcoming & accommodating. The pitches were mown into the field so everyone had their own clear, well spaced area. The composting toilets were good-felt clean and were not smelly. The barn was great with showers, washing up area, a little honesty shop and some picnic tables.

Disliked: Nothing!

Woodland Camp geodesic dome (no pets)

Liked: This place is an absolute hidden gem! We were warmly welcomed by Michael who was a brilliant host and so friendly. He showed the children the animals and they thought the pigs and the alpacas were brilliant! The geodome was amazing with a comfy bed and we all slept really well. The siting of the dome is so tranquil and it was so lovely to wake up to the countryside view. The facilities in the big barn were also really good. The site is well located for exploring this part of South Wales. I couldn't recommend this place enough and we will definitely be coming back again!

Local attractions

The famed former home of famed Welsh poet Dylan Thomas, The Boathouse, is under 10 minutes' drive from the site. There are spectacular views of the Taf estuary from here (Thomas's first poem after moving in was on the view from his writing shed), and you should be able to see local species like seals and oystercatchers as well as herons and egrets. From The Boathouse (have a sturdy bite to eat in the tearoom first), set off on the mighty Wales Coast Path, the 870-mile route from Chepstow in Monmouthshire north to Queensferry in Flintshire. This is some spectacular scenery (hailed by travel boffins as the best coastal landscape in Britain), so aim to hike as much as you can manage; the Carmarthenshire section is 68 miles and includes the 2,470 acres of the Millennium Coastal Park overlooking the Gower peninsula. A couple of castles are within easy reach (Laugharne is 10 minutes' drive away and Llansteffan 25), but for a day out with a difference drive the 15 minutes to Pendine Sands, home of the splendid Museum of Speed.
