  • Wild camping on a 103-acre organic farm in the Mid Wales hills
  • Brecon Beacons National Park 10 minutes' drive; 20 to Cwm Rhaeadr
  • Grass pitches and a focus on conservation; shops and pubs close by
On an organic farm in the gorgeous Towy Valley in Wales, Glanmarlais Camping has nearly-wild pitches on mostly flat ground, as well as space for small campervans in a separate field for vehicles, with spectacular views over the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountain. If you’re in need of a peaceful rural retreat and you’d like to contribute something to Wales’s natural heritage, this is the place – funds from this campsite go towards turning the farm into an area of enhanced flora and fauna diversity through the use of semi-feral grazing livestock, or conservation grazing. Currently, one of the greatest threats to the UK's floral portfolio is the invasive weed Himalayan Balsam – if any guests want to get involved with the strangely satisfying and highly virtuous activity of 'balsam bashing', the site owners would be happy to accommodate. A round-up of simple on-site amenities include two compost toilets, a washing-up area and a hot shower powered by an air-source heat pump (with changing room and vanity area). Guests also have access to charging facilities for devices and a communal fridge – both powered by renewable energy. The large camping barn provides a characterful communal dry space with tables and seating for damp days. Campfires are allowed by your tent, and firewood will be available for purchase on site, with an initial welcome bundle on the house. You can source other supplies from handy stores in Llandovery (15 minutes’ drive) and Llandeilo (20 minutes). Both of these pretty towns also have craft shops, cafés and restaurants in brightly coloured buildings. Enjoy an evening stroll to ancient Llansadwrn church (30 minutes’ walk), and you might just get diverted into the local pub for a few games of pool, darts or occasional quizzes – and there’s plenty of fine Welsh ale on tap too. On your way home, don’t forget to look up and take in the glorious constellations in one of the world’s darkest skies – sure ain’t no telescopes needed here.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked: We had a wonderful night’s stay at this site over the August Bank Holiday. The facilities are spotlessly clean and the views from the site are incredible, with great walks available. Rosie made us feel really welcome and we look forward to returning.

Disliked: Nothing

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: A really beautiful and peaceful site, just a few large pitches dotted around a meadow. Compost toilets and hot shower which were always spotless. Our girls (3 and 5) had a lovely time playing in the long grass and paddling in the stream. A very warm welcome from Rosie (and her dog Tilly) who was so helpful. Rural location but large supermarket within 20 mins drive.

Disliked: No, nothing. It was pretty much perfect.

Local attractions

Carmarthen (40 minutes' drive) is the legendary birthplace of Merlin the Wizard, but today it’s probably better known for its indoor and outdoor markets selling everything from bespoke jewellery to artisan breads. The town’s big-brand shops and cinema are also just the job for the occasional rainy Welsh day. If you’re keen to up those green credentials and explore on foot or by pedal power, there’s top-notch walking and cycling in the Brecon Beacons National Park (10 minutes) and the Black Mountain (20 minutes). An added bonus for sporty types is the challenging mountain biking trail in Cwm Rhaeadr (20 minutes), considered one of the best areas in the UK. The beaches of west Wales, Mumbles and the Gower Peninsula (all about an hour) are ready and waiting for family adventures in rock pools and burning off energy on the sand. Closer to base camp, you can explore the National Botanic Gardens of Wales, the hilltop ruins of Carreg Cennen Castle (both 30 minutes) or the deer park and ornate 17th-century mansion at Dinefwr (20 minutes).
