  • Dog-friendly site 10 miles from the Brecon Beacons National Park
  • Walking distance from a cave and the Llyn Brianne Dam & Reservoir
  • Free space for ball games and fishing available on the river Towy
Low impact and high enjoyment in the wild West Wales… surrounded by oak trees and mountains, alongside the river Towy and just over 10 miles from the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park, the dog-friendly Gelli Fechan Camping and Caravan Site is a remote place with gorgeous dark skies and lots of local beauty spots. There are no manicured lawns or concrete pitches here, and there's no wifi connection or phone signal either – the site isn’t heavy on facilities, but there’s a tidy toilet block with running water and the centre of the site is a free space so that kids can run about and kick a ball. Just metres away from the river Towy, you’re welcome to pay for a day’s fishing (just be sure to have the necessary license). If fishing isn’t quite your thing, but a cosy pub just might be, there are two pubs within walking distance (a 40-minute or a 15-minute walk respectively). Llandovery (20 minutes’ drive) has a fab Chinese, Indian, fish and chips and food shops too. Throughout the day, you may catch sight of Mr Jones, the farmer, who’s making sure everything is in hand. As a local, he can tell you all about the local beauty spots. If you ask nicely, he’ll tell you about his prize-winning sheep too. Gelli Fechan Camping and Caravan Site is committed to freedom and flexibility – so dogs are welcome, but must be kept under control, and kids the same (although not necessarily on a lead, of course). Set up wherever you like within the boundaries of the site, but leave the centre of the site free and six metres between your neighbours, and feel free to build yourself a firepit (no larger than a metre wide, please).

Local attractions

If you feel like a warm swim, there’s a leisure centre in Llandovery (20 minutes’ drive). But for a quick stroll, some birdwatching and cave exploring, Ogof Twm Sion Cati is just 20 minutes’ walk away (or an even shorter drive). The cave is rumoured to have been a hiding place for the ‘Welsh Robin Hood’. As for the sublime scenery in the Twy Valley, the hikes at Llyn Brianne Dam & Reservoir (45 minutes’ walk) have some excellent viewpoints (as well as old mining apparatus and quarries scattered around). As for something a little different, perhaps a trip to the Welsh National Opera and the National Museum Cardiff, both in Cardiff (an hour and 45 minutes), or the Roman gold mine, Dolaucothi Gold Mines (25 minutes)?
