  • Small family-run back to basics site next to Llansteffan beach
  • A 25-minute drive to Laugharne or National Botanic Garden of Wales
  • Dogs welcome; short walk to village shop, pubs, bakery and play park
Fancy rolling straight out of bed and onto the beach? The Cottage Fields is a place where you can do just that – this small Carmarthernshire site is right next to the beach at Llansteffan, with just a small wall separating the pitches from the sands. This fabulous setting means you can get out onto the beach whenever you fancy it, for swims, kayaking, fishing, rockpooling and body boarding – or just some time spent playing in the sand. You can also take a stroll along the seaside pathway up to the castle, or just wander into the village, which has a couple of pubs, a shop, a pizza takeaway and a bakery that produces freshly baked bread in the mornings. You can also pick up ferries to Ferryside from here, or join boat trips around the coastline. The atmosphere here is very much a relaxed and family-friendly one: there’s plenty of space for kids to run about on the fields and out on the beach (although there’s also a pirate-themed play park 10 minutes’ walk away where they can scamper about). Dogs are welcome too, and you should be able to find plenty of places to take them for a walk in the nearby woods. Those of you who fancy an alfresco dinner with a sea view will be pleased to hear that both campfires and barbecues are permitted here. Facilities on site are minimal (please note there are no toilets or showers) but there is a disposal point and a clean water supply 100 metres from the pitches at the main farmhouse.

Route directions

Take the B4312 from Carmarthen and follow it to Llansteffan. When you enter the village, you will see a welcome sign on a millstone. At the junction just after the millstone, it is better to drive through the village due to a difficult junction, so turn left and follow signs for the beach along Water Lane (beware of uneven road surface) before returning to the B4312 and carrying on to the site.

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: View over the River Towy to Ferrybridge which was lit up at night. Owner doesn’t let anyone park in front of small wall so everyone can have a view. You can also ‘clamber’ over the wall to find soft sand and sit or take a walk on the beach. Fresh water and Toilet Disposal on site. Flat pitches on most of site, particularly against the back hedge (didn’t need chocks). Gate is locked at night but you are given access code to open gate at anytime. Lovely host - very chatty and informative. Would definitely stay again. Tip: Best to take the good B road in from Carmarthen. We came in from the other direction which had very narrow roads, sharp corners and few passing places.

Liked: Friendly welcome and very helpful/informative. The site grounds are kept to a high standard. Excellent location right on the beach with beautiful views of the castle. It’s a short walk for Coffee shop, chips or ice cream etc. A brilliant back to basics break away with the kids and dog. I will definitely be a regular customer. Thank you
