  • Pop-up pitches on a farm with gorgeous Monmouthshire hill views
  • A 20-minute drive to the Forest of Dean, and 25 minutes to Symonds Yat
  • Wild camping with kids’ games and woodland walks
If you’re lucky, you’ll get to see at least one of the amazing sunsets at Red Sky at Night Campsite near Monmouth – but if you don’t, there’s mighty compensation in the shape of the spectacular views from just about everywhere on the site. And of course, on clear nights, the night skies are diamond-bright with stars. This family-run camping field on a livestock farm is managed on very laidback lines. Pitch up wherever you like and feel free to park by your tent. Raised campfires are allowed and you can hire firepits and grills (the owners sell sausages from the farm) and buy kindling. You can bring your dogs too (take them for walks in the adjoining woods) but just be sure to keep them under control around the animals. Kids are certainly carefully looked after here. Read the note left on a tree for mini-campers and join a teddy bear hunt through the woods. Round and about the site, your offspring can entertain themselves on rope swings and a climbing frame or by making dens and following a mini-tractor course across the camping field. There is also a little play area for smaller kids. Wild camping this may be (there’s no electricity on site, please note) but there are two nicely designed compost loos and a fresh water tap. So bring your guitar, light that fire, break out the barbecue and enjoy the chilled vibe.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Great location for exploring south Wales and Brecon Beacons park. The site has amazing views over green rolling hills and a lot of privacy as the pitches are nicely spaced out. Our kids loved the swings and the Teddy Bears trail, this easily made it into their favorite campsite. Chloe checked in on us to ensure we were enjoying the campsite and kindly brought us a fire pit. We had a great experience even though it rained in one of the days. If you are in the area, we also recommend a trip on the steam train with Brecon Mountain Railway which all of us enjoyed very much.

Disliked: We would recommend the site for the warmer months as the facilities are minimal with no hot water.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked: This campsite is just what is needed when you want to get away somewhere quiet and relaxing. The campsite has designated spaces which are big and are spaciously laid out. We had a welcome text from Chloe, the owner, on the morning of arrival. This detailed everything we needed to know for our stay. Firepits and wood are available to rent at a very reasonable cost. Once set up with our firepit we were able to sit back, watch the sunset and see the stars. The only little thing to be aware of is that the site doesn't currently have showers or waste bins but for one night away we didn't need these and it didn't spoil our stay.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Fantastic views, incredible starry sky at night as the sky was so dark! Lovely composting loos and handy washing up shed with a few spare cooking items. Everything was very clean and well maintained. The owner called round in the afternoon to make sure everyone had what they needed! Paths are mown into the meadow to space camping pitches out nicely. Our children were too old but very thoughtful facilities provided for younger children - play equipment, mown track for pedal vehicles, bear trail in the wood!

Disliked: Quite expensive for basically a field with a loo, it was £40 for us 2 adults and 2 kids, but it is a really lovely field and very well thought out. Beyond the control of the site owners, but be prepared for detours if you are walking from the site - most of the public footpaths we attempted were not way marked and / or completely over grown!

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked: Loved this site! Nicely laid out and maintained, welcoming hosts and of course beautiful views. We particularly liked the way each pitch was mown out of long grass so you had your own defined area and nobody was on top of each other. We would recommend a visit to Monmouth, Ross-on-Wye and Skenfrith Castle while you're there. If you're thinking of eating at The Bell in Skenfrith though, check the times for when food is served and consider booking a table in advance (we didn't get to eat there as they were fully booked). Despite the weather being a mixture of sun and cloud we still managed to enjoy the beautiful views and saw quite a nice sunset and some stars during the night. We will obviously be returning to (hopefully) get the full experience!

Disliked: Nothing

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Me five year old son and I had a perfect stay. This was our first time camping and I wouldn’t change a moment of our experience at Red Sky at Night. The site itself is beautiful and peaceful and we loved the teddy bear trail through the woods - we ended up doing it three times! Chloe is a wonderful host who was always available if we needed help and was very thoughtful in getting in touch and communicating with us before and after our stay. We spent a day at Skenfrith castle and enjoyed some fantastic wild swimming, which we highly recommend. We were genuinely sad to leave the site but we are so grateful for such a memorable experience.
