Powered grass campsite

Liked: Friendly, welcoming campsite that is dog friendly and has undergone a refurbishment. There is a pub attached that does the most amazing food and Sunday lunches get booked up super quick. Dogs allowed in bar area of pub which is a bonus. Lovely outside area and park for children. Toilets, showers and washing up area clean. Owners have more plans for the site such as hard standings in the next twelve months. Definitely going back.

Disliked: Wi-fi only in pub area currently doesn't reach out to the pitches.

Powered grass campsite

Liked: We arrived on Friday, and we received a lovely welcome, the pitch for our campervan and awning was a great size with electric hook, toilets and shower facilities were clean. There's a pub on site, with a little park and is dog friendly.

Disliked: We booked 2 nights as was arriving straight from work and chose here as the advert stated there was a pub serving food on site with entertainment which is what we require, sadly this isn't true, after sorting ourselves out and putting up our awning - at 8pm we popped into the pub for food and was told that they weren't serving any, so feel we were totally misled as wouldn't have booked if we had known this, we left the next day and came home as after putting the awning up to take it down to drive for food then come back was not an option - totally defeated the object :(

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: We stayed for a couple of nights in April 2024 where we finally had a dry and relatively sunny and warm weekend! We booked this location for its proximity to the Offa’s Dyke path and the on-site pub. Unfortunately we were a week too early as the pub had not yet opened but the owners kindly allowed us in for a preview of the interiors and offered a cup of tea. Paula, Damian and their son were lovely, chatting to us about the renovations and their plans for the pub and campsite. They are truly wonderful people and I look forward to visiting again when it’s all opened! The campsite is a decent size (I’d say maybe 30 pitches?) Mostly grass at the moment although I understand that they will be putting in a few more hard standing pitches in the future. A lot of the pitches have electric hook ups but we didn’t use this and there are 3 drinking water taps dotted around the site. The toilet block was clean, there were 3 showers, 3 toilet cubicles, 2 sinks and a urinal in the men’s room. Don’t know about the ladies but probably a similar number minus the urinal. There is also 2 sinks for the pot wash area but no other kitchen facilities such as fridge/freezer or kettle/toaster. This wasn’t a problem for us but something to consider if you’re looking for this. The water was hot and ran consistently so all good there, takes about half a minute to warm up but once it’s to temperature it remains hot. There is a waste water disposal outside of the toilet block (not sure if it’s for chemical waste) and there was also a black bin. Nothing by way of recycling at the moment. The campsite is very well lit at night and we had no problems navigating our way around at night. There’s also a children’s play area with swings and picnic benches. The field was dry under foot and no water pooling anywhere. It’s situated next to the river (as the name would suggest) which can be heard and even though it’s just off an A road, that road is barely used at night. We slept very well and didn’t notice any traffic noise. Looking forward to visiting this site again when it’s all fully up and running and looking forward to dining in the pub!

Disliked: Didn’t dislike anything.

Local attractions

Active types can be on Offa’s Dyke Path in 20 minutes’ stroll, or head off into Bannau Brycheiniog National Park from the pitches for mountain-biking adventures on the trans-park Cycle Across the Beacons route. Families can stretch their legs on the grassy common around the National Park Visitor Centre at Libanus (50 minutes’ drive), where red kites can often be spotted in the skies. Historic Hereford (half an hour) has plenty to keep everyone happy for the day, from the exquisite medieval Mappa Mundi in the Norman-era cathedral to the period oak furniture and wall hangings at the half-timbered Black and White House Museum, which dates from 1621. Learn about the region’s industrial heritage at the Waterworks Museum, and round off the trip at the Cider Museum for a guided tour and tasting session. Kids behaved nicely? Time for trekking adventures at Golden Valley Llamas (15 minutes). If the weather isn’t playing ball, make for the swimming pool and squash courts at Abergavenny Leisure Centre (10 minutes), or take toddlers to have a tootle around at the soft-play centre in Marlow’s Place (15 minutes).
