  • Small, family-run farm site in south Wales’s scenic Neath Valley
  • Aberavon Beach 25 minutes’ drive; Gower Peninsula 40 minutes
  • Toilets and showers; campfires; covered communal barbecue area
Surrounded by the mountains and woodlands of the scenic Neath Valley of south Wales, Wenallt Wild Camp is a peaceful spot on a family-run farm on the outskirts of the village of Tonna, a 10-minute drive from the market town of Neath. There’s a lot to like about this site, starting with its handy location – within walking distance of the River Neath, plus convenience stores and a pub. Gnoll Country Park (five minutes’ drive or 20 minutes on foot) has woodland walks, duck ponds and adventure playgrounds, plus a nine-hole pitch-and-putt golf course. There’s also a lot to like about how easy it is to get out to the coast. The sandy beaches of Aberavon and Port Talbot are about 25 minutes away, while the Gower Peninsula (40 minutes), an area of outstanding natural beauty, has dramatic coastal paths, sheltered coves and historic sites such as the ruins of medieval Weobley Castle. There’s also lots to see (including waterfalls) along the area’s inland waterways. Wenallt Wild Camp has facilities including toilets and showers (all of which are maintained to a high standard) and a covered communal barbecue area with a dart board, dining table and firepit. You also have permission to build campfires (in the designated areas) and dogs (on leads) are welcome on site. Need to stock up on supplies? Try the local farm shop (five minutes) and sample some fresh Glamorgan produce.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite (pet friendly)

Liked: Lovely view, lots of space, nice and quiet, clean facilities and friendly owners.

Disliked: It’s a steep drive up a narrow lane, which was only a downside because our van is really old and struggles up hills. Lane is well surfaced and lit up at night which really helps!

Liked: It’s quiet, secluded. Lovely views toilets and showers, running water at a sink to wash up etc, we have young kids and they loved running around and just exploring the wooded area as well as picking the blackberries. Nice under cover seated area.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite (pet friendly)

Liked: Very friendly, simple back to basics camping. Handy shelters to cook under when the weather is wet. Easy 30 mins drive to four waterfalls. Very helpful and friendly owners. Welcoming quiet campsite and a pleasant change from the usual busy regimented campsites.

Shepherd's hut (no electricity)

Liked: This was our second stay we love the shepherd's hut, it was very clean and spacious, had everything we needed between the hut and the communal area and if we did need anything we only needed to contact the owner and she would sort it straight away. The toilets were clean and tidy and kept to a high standard as was the shower. The site was very peaceful even though we seen several other campers. The owner left us alone to do our own thing and only popped by to see if we needed anything. Close to shops, pubs etc, had an amazing, relaxing weekend away.

Disliked: Nothing

Shepherd's hut (no electricity)

Liked: I absolutely loved my stay here. I booked very last minute but was very impressed with the level of service I received. The site felt very safe, the hut was clean and had everything I needed for a comfortable stay. On arrival I was shown around and was given several bottles of water and some wood for a fire. The site was lovely and peaceful with beautiful views and a perfect spot to get out exploring from during the day. I will definitely be visiting again in the future
