  • Small, family-run farm site in south Wales’s scenic Neath Valley
  • Aberavon Beach 25 minutes’ drive; Gower Peninsula 40 minutes
  • Toilets and showers; campfires; covered communal barbecue area
Surrounded by the mountains and woodlands of the scenic Neath Valley of south Wales, Wenallt Wild Camp is a peaceful spot on a family-run farm on the outskirts of the village of Tonna, a 10-minute drive from the market town of Neath. There’s a lot to like about this site, starting with its handy location – within walking distance of the River Neath, plus convenience stores and a pub. Gnoll Country Park (five minutes’ drive or 20 minutes on foot) has woodland walks, duck ponds and adventure playgrounds, plus a nine-hole pitch-and-putt golf course. There’s also a lot to like about how easy it is to get out to the coast. The sandy beaches of Aberavon and Port Talbot are about 25 minutes away, while the Gower Peninsula (40 minutes), an area of outstanding natural beauty, has dramatic coastal paths, sheltered coves and historic sites such as the ruins of medieval Weobley Castle. There’s also lots to see (including waterfalls) along the area’s inland waterways. Wenallt Wild Camp has facilities including toilets and showers (all of which are maintained to a high standard) and a covered communal barbecue area with a dart board, dining table and firepit. You also have permission to build campfires (in the designated areas) and dogs (on leads) are welcome on site. Need to stock up on supplies? Try the local farm shop (five minutes) and sample some fresh Glamorgan produce.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Friendly welcome on arrival and regular check ins to see if we needed anything. Good flat hard standing for the van with grass alongside for the awning. Amazing views, lots of space and quiet so no queues for the facilities. Shower and toilets were clean. Camp fires allowed and fireplace provided at no cost. The website said checkout was 10am but the owners were very relaxed and did not insist on this.

Disliked: Much further from local shops and pubs than the website suggested.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: We had the best stay here, some of us in shepherds huts, some tents and some motorhomes. We were given the whole field to ourselves with the most well equipped outside kitchen. The compost toilets were great and when the shower had a glitch it was fixed in 10 minutes. We learnt about the farm, surrounding area and found the whole family accommodating and very friendly with great stories to tell. Walks from the sight were full of surprises with waterfalls and grotto. This beautiful site in untouched natural surroundings was everything and more that we were after. Thank you so much.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Lovely place with idyllic scenery Couple who run the place were really friendly and were more than helpful, they gave me a choice of where to stay, bought round firewood and couldn’t have been any nicer I stayed there with my dog in the back of my Land Rover and they were very accommodating. The site itself is very well kept, well sign posted and even the other campers were very kind. Lovely walk up into the woods too for the dog, really enjoyed everything about the place I’ll definitely be returning again thank you for your hospitality!

Disliked: The only thing I didn’t like was that I didn’t have a longer stay, I’d have happily stayed a few more nights
