  • Rural family-owned site a mile from Llantwit Major and its beach
  • A 20-minute drive from Dunraven Bay and 40 minutes from Cardiff
  • Play area, shop and a café on site; walk to restaurants
There’s no doubt about it: this family-owned rural site is a splendid introduction to the South Wales coast. The peaceful location is only one mile from Llantwit Major (a town with pretty cafés, shops and restaurants), placing it well within reach of Cardiff, Barry, the several beaches – like those in Southerndown, Monknash and Ogmore-by-Sea. All of this is part of the Glamorgan Heritage Coast, a spectacular 14-mile stretch of which the nearest part is Llantwit Major beach, 25 minutes’ walk away from the site. Over the clifftop, there’s access to the Wales Coast Path, which leads to gorgeous Nash Point Lighthouse and Monknash beach. The owners live on the four-and-a-half-acre site, which is surrounded by peaceful farmland and flanked by trees and hedgerows for shelter and privacy. There are plenty of facilities on site for kids, including a large wooden climbing frame with a swing, monkey bars and a 14-foot trampoline. Quiet time begins at 11pm and ends at 7am, and loud radios are banned, as the place is very much family oriented. That’s not the end of the site's facilities, as there’s a café on site. The modern amenities block has free hot showers, ladies' and gents' shower rooms and changing rooms with a hand basin. Free hairdryers and shaving points are provided. For disabled guests, there’s a large open-plan shower room, and for families, there’s a baby/family changing room. Deal with laundry using the washing machine and tumble dryer. An iron and an electric socket (for straighteners) run on tokens. Other practical matters are easily sorted too. There’s a small shop on site stocked with easy-to-forget essentials and a range of camping gas and bottled butane and propane gas are available.

Local attractions

Coastal cravings are easily fulfilled around here. In Southerndown, tucked-away Dunraven Bay (20 minutes’ drive) has rockpools and compact sand for crafting sandcastles, while Merthyr Mawr (25 minutes) has towering sand dunes to clamber through and Barry Island (20 minutes) is packed with family amusements. Porthcawl (35 minutes), a little further west, is the go-to surfing spot, with several surf schools and beaches – although if you have your own board, try out Southerndown and Ogmore By Sea beach (25 minutes) too if the conditions are just right. The Welsh capital is likely, of course, to draw your eye too; Cardiff (40 minutes) has a gorgeous bay with restaurants, bars and barrage walks, and in the town centre, there’s a historic castle alongside restaurants, escape rooms, bars and stunning arcades.

Liked: Fantastic place to stay with a warm welcome. We found the campsite very clean with lovely warm showers and great facilities. Was kindly told no rush to leave the site in the morning as they are flexible. We enjoyed a lovely hearty breakfast and coffee that was very reasonable priced and will most certainly be a returning customer

Liked: Easy to find. Friendly quiet site, well maintained. Showers were fab, plenty of hot water. Easy walk into the town and great beach/cliff walks.

Disliked: Being really picky would be great if there was a drive over grey waste.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Dog friendly, clean toilets and free showers with no queues. Undercover washing up area. In a great location with walks from the campsite. Friendly staff and cafe on site. The owner personally showed u our pitch and gave us some options.

Disliked: Some guests zoomed around on those illegal electric scooters which really upset my dog.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Very accommodating, Dianne was brilliant with our late arrival and made us feel very welcome! Our pitch was in a great spot and we were explained where everything was and the various options, despite us being almost 2 hours later than planned Dianne took the time to ensure all was clear and we were comfortable. The showers were clean and nice and hot, the recycling options were refreshing to see. We didn't try the cafe but it looked very inviting with a nice play area for the kids and a grass open field that the dogs were able to use freely. Phone signal was decent. Nice clean site and friendly atmosphere - would definitely come back!

Disliked: Nothing comes to mind! Bit of a windy trek finding the site...like many others!
