  • Friendly glamping site in green countryside, overlooking Dunraven Bay
  • Dry and warm bell tents with toilet and shower facilities on site
  • Have meals at the on-site pub or restaurant across the way
If you’re on the hunt for Glamorgan glamping, take a look at the smart canvas digs set up at Bell Tents Wales, a short trot from the beach in the little village of Southerndown (five miles south of Bridgend). Each of the fancy tents here is slightly different in style but all are kitted out with rugs, cushions and airbeds. There’s plenty of sleeping and living space inside for up to six, and on summer days you can roll up the sides to take in the views while you lounge under cover. The units are dry and warm, and there are toilet and shower facilities on site. You'll need to bring bedding (pillows and sleeping bags or duvets) along with whatever kitchen kit you need for your stay. A traditional country pub is just next door for drinks, food and occasional live music on Friday or Saturday nights; also just across the lane is a restaurant that serves breakfast at weekends.

Local attractions

The site overlooks Dunraven Bay, locally known as Southerndown beach. The beach is easily accessed by a short walk or by car, and is a popular starting point for sailing, surfing and fishing. For local walks, make for the sand dunes at Merthyr Mawr, which overlook the Bristol Channel, or to Porthcawl, Ogmore-by-Sea and walks by Ogmore and Candleston castles. Woodland walks, castles, villages and fab beaches are all around this Glamorgan Heritage Coast setting. Horse riding is available from Ogmore Farm set under Ogmore Castle, where two-hour treks leave from the yard twice a day to canter along beaches and past high sand dunes. Or leave from the farm to go across the stepping stones on the River Ewenny, then over the swinging bridge to reach the village of Merthyr Mawr. From there, walk through the village towards the dunes, past a pretty church, wildlife to spot and strawberry fields to pick from (in season, charge applies). For golf, Southerndown Golf Club a couple of miles away is a links course making up one of the driest courses in Wales; golf is available all year round for members and visitors. Walk west from Ogmore Farm to get to Candleston Castle at the entrance to the sand dune slack of Merthyr Mawr Warren, or walk, drive or take the bus to the farm and then through Merthyr Mawr village.
