Secluded spots by private lake (added by manager 08 Sep 2022)
Aracdia camping
Stunning sunset over the lake
Safari tent sleeps 6

  • Lakeside glamping at a 60-acre site 10 minutes' drive from Wrexham
  • Chester, Llangollen and three golf courses within a half-hour drive
  • Fishing lake; café and licensed bar with live music
Finding a secluded spot surrounded by mature woodlands in north Wales is a fine idea in itself – but it gets even better here if you’re into your fishing. And that’s because Commonwood Leisure has 10 lakes around its 60-acre site, catering for everyone from kids and beginners to pros (who may like to wrestle with the 60-pound whopper that lives in the catfish lake…) It’s all set up to be as straightforward as possible at this well-maintained park: the pitches are set up either by a one-acre lake or in a family area away from the water's edge. Wherever you stay you'll get plenty of space (plus a private toilet and parking space). Not fussed by fishing? This lakeside setting should be pretty splendid for you too: there’s plenty of space to relax by the water, taking in the views and lighting up a barbecue or firepit for warm evenings. Getting out and about should be straightforward as well: the site is five minutes’ drive from the village of Holt (for pubs, cafés and an excellent farm shop) and 10 minutes from the centre of Wrexham. A café on site has indoor and outdoor seating; it's open from 9am to 2pm for breakfast and lunches. There's also a licensed bar on site which has live music throughout the high season and every other weekend in low season. A pizza bar is open for food. And what else? There are plenty of areas to walk (a plus for dog owners, as the site's dog-friendly). If walking’s not such a hit with the kids, they can get stuck into rural life by spending some time with the herd of friendly pygmy goats on site (even friendlier, rumour has it, if you grab a pack of ginger biscuits from the café to feed them with…).

Fishing Canal powered cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Pitches were big nice size, if you like fishing this is for you

Disliked: We chose this campsite as it had a cafe/restaurant and live entertainment we arrived on Tuesday on our way home from Berkshire when we arrived we were told the cafe/ restaurant were closed as they had a big wedding on Saturday, when you book a campsite you expect to get what you pay for , if we had known it wasn't open for food we would of gone else were, we were offered nuggets and chips but that's not what we wanted, the bar was open but you had to go to the office to say you wanted a drink, no live entertainment what was advertised, as everybody else said definitely not enough toilets for such a big camp site.

Liked: A small site with massive pitches, our little van looked lost Have lakes to fish in and a lake to swim in, but keep an eye on kids at the swimming lake.

Disliked: The loo building looked a little unfinished, needed some soap.

Madoc Lake primitive cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Really lovely, spacious pitches! Lots to do onsite including a small swimming lake, a bar with live music in the evenings and delicious pizzas! We had two dogs with us as well and they were very welcome. Plenty of space on our pitch to have them on long lines. There were also fields to walk them on! The staff were all very nice - helpful and welcoming!

Disliked: Not enough toilets / shower facilities for the size of the site. Manageable but more would have been nice! Our nearest one was also the one used by the swimmers in the lake so was often busy. A washing up station nearby would have also been very welcome.

Madoc Lake primitive cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Our 2nd visit, and it didn't disappoint, just planning when we can come again. So honest review, pitches are absolutely massive, downside concrete under the bricks so go close to the grass if needing to peg anything down. The lake is fabulous for paddle boarding etc. We bobbed around in a dingy, lake water is waist height for me (I'm 5ft 1) can't comment in the plentiful fishing lakes, but if you do fish you are spoilt for choice on lakes. Yet to try the cafe or pizza, but the bar has a very relaxed feel. Showers are free there is only one by the lake but never a queue for it. If wild swimming bring beach shoes as its silt at the bottom. Loved our stay, would highly recommend & will definitely be returning for a longer stay.

Disliked: Nothing
