  • Peaceful site with a two-bedroom cabin near the Wales–England border
  • Alderford Lake watersports 10 minutes’ drive; Chirk Castle 35 minutes
  • Dog-friendly; well-equipped kitchen; sun lounger in the garden
A peaceful site surrounded by splendid Welsh countryside, Nook Cabin sits close to the border with England, a 15-minute drive from the Shropshire market town of Whitchurch. Fenn’s, Whixall & Bettisfield Mosses National Nature Reserve, with its wild peat bogs and heathland (not to mention thriving birdlife, including curlews and hen harriers) stretches just to the south. Accommodation is in (you guessed it) a cabin – a two-bedroom log cabin, to be precise. And a pretty well equipped one, too. There’s a bathroom with a hot-water shower, plus a kitchen with a microwave oven, a kettle and a range of utensils, along with a table where you can gather the troops for family meals. If you’d rather head to the pub for a traditional dinner, the nearest one is about 10 minutes’ drive away, in Hanmer. Added bonus: after eating here, you can kickstart your digestion with a stroll on the banks of Hanmer Mere lake. Back at base, step outside and breathe in the clean forest air as you unwind on a sun lounger with a glass of wine, observing the antics of the resident animals (cows, horses and chickens). Active types can lace up their boots, put the dog on the lead and set off to explore the area. Within a 10-minute drive, you can reach the Llangollen branch of the Shropshire Union Canal, with its waterfront paths, fishing spots and canoe launches. If you’re into watersports, head to Alderford Lake (10 minutes) for an inflatable adventure course, in addition to paddleboard and canoe hire.

2 bedroom cabin

Liked: The location of the cabin was secluded and quiet and relaxing. It is located in a large field which would be ideal for young children to play in - also plenty of space in the field for parking. There were cows in the adjacent field but far enough away not to be an issue. The cabin itself was easy to find and comfortable with all amenities including Wi-Fi. Shower was nice and hot and the shower room was the largest we had seen with plenty of room for changing. We were able to enjoy meals on the outside patio as well as a barbecue and fire brazier in the evening.

Liked: Really enjoyed our stay at Nook Cabin. Very peaceful and rustic. Our dogs were very welcome and enjoyed the space to roam outside. The kitchen is well equipped with everything you need and we loved sitting out on the decking over looking the fields and cows. Brian our host showed us round initially and then left us to it which was perfect.

2 bedroom cabin

Liked: Cooking space Outside seating Hot water

Disliked: The cabin was full of bugs, moths, spiders, webs and flies. I understand it's a wooden building but it could be cleaner. The road to get to the cabin is quite tough on the car, especially if it isn't a high enough car The cabin is 15m from the owner's house meaning your outdoor space is completely overlooked by the whole house. It didn't really offer any privacy. Ceilings are very low near bathroom sink and in bedrooms - anyone over 5"10 will struggle.

2 bedroom cabin

Liked: What an absolute gem of a place! It’s basically a magical wooden cabin that is so peaceful and in a beautiful spot. It has everything you need and was spotlessly clean and really comfortable. Brian, the host is lovely, very friendly and helpful. His house is at the other side of the garden. He made sure we were ok, showed us round the cabin, gave us fire wood and then left us alone.

2 bedroom cabin

Liked: Beautiful setting, peaceful. Accommodation offer rural setting with woodland cabin/basic feel whilst still providing everything you need. Well equipped kitchen with air fryer/microwave/cooker etc. Some previous reviews complained about the lighting but we found this ample and in fitting with feel of the cabin. If you want a no atmosphere, led lite white box then opt for a Travelodge, if you want rustic and atmospheric then this is place. There is on outside light on the porch/decking but we opted to turn this off to see the stars and enjoy the darkness (It is very dark outside!) Wifi easy to access and provided enough speed for the kids tablets and phones. Curtains have also been fitted in both bedroom following a previous review Brian was a true gent. Friendly and helpful whilst leaving you to your own devices. Gladly showed the kids his cows including a newly born calf.

Disliked: Not much to dislike. The cabin was as described in the ad. The area was peaceful and hosts fantastic. You would struggle to find something to complain about.

Local attractions

Inspired by and based on Tom Blofeld’s children’s books, the adventure grounds at BeWILDerwood Cheshire (15 minutes’ drive) include treehouses, rope bridges, zipwires and assorted timber structures in the middle of a lush forest. There are also picnic areas, plus organised activities throughout the year. Built in the late 13th century, National Trust - Chirk Castle (35 minutes) has elegant interiors hung with tapestries and paintings, plus displays of medieval weapons and other decorative objects. In the surrounding parkland, you might be able to spot birdlife including woodpeckers and kestrels, as well as a well-preserved stretch of Offa’s Dyke. High atop a green hill overlooking Llangollen is Castell Dinas Brân (40 minutes), which was built in the 1260s and destroyed less than 20 years later by the English. Take a stroll among its imposing ruins while taking in spectacular and far-reaching views of the Dee Valley.
