  • Summer festival vibes with a horsebox bar, music and food trucks
Head for the hills at Camp Bongo, an adults-only pop-up site that has rather mastered the art of combining laidback luxury with a mini festival twist. Set just a five-minute drive from Llangollen, it's been designed as a playground for adults with a summer festival camping vibe. How so? There's a horsebox bar that runs throughout the season, plus an ever-changing line-up of live music, food trucks and daytime activities. Depending on when you visit, you might be able to join ‘paint and sip’ sessions, wine tasting or – for active types – activities like archery, axe throwing and climbing. Later, settle in at the social area to watch the sunset or catch some live music in one of the intimate performance spaces. There's so much going on, but don't get too wrapped up that you forget Camping Bongo's spectacular location just a couple of miles from Llangollen, popular for its canal and heritage steam railway. Other splendid activities to get stuck into locally include taking a boat ride over the 19 arches at Pontcysyllte Aqueduct (15 minutes' drive away) or hiking up to the ruins at Castell Dinas Brân (10 minutes' drive). Surrounded by North Wales countryside in the Clwydian Range & Dee Valley National Landscape, this is a green, green spot. So no wonder that Camp Bongo is keen to operate in an eco-friendly manner, with compost toilets, cold showers and freshwater standpipes.

What customers say

This adults-only, festival-style campground boasts a prime beachside location with stunning views. Visitors love the friendly staff, live entertainment, and vibrant atmosphere. While the eco-friendly composting toilets and cold showers are appreciated by many, some found them basic. Food and drink vendors are popular, but lines can be long. Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Really enjoyable experience, bar and food were excellent. Staff were fabulous and worked really hard, entertainment was excellent on both nights. Great atmosphere.

Disliked Never a fan of portaloos 😂 although they were cleaned every morning and always had toilet roll.

Local attractions

Llangollen (five minutes' drive) is certainly a splendid spot to explore, with its scenic canal, steam railway and many pubs and restaurants. However, in an area like the Dee Valley, it's well worth getting out to explore as much as possible – perhaps the National Trust's Chirk Castle (20 minutes) to see the suits of armour or the Horseshoe Falls (10 minutes) for a picnic. If you're keen to give your hiking boots some action, this is a good base too. World's End (20 minutes) is considered one of those must-see hiking spots in the Clwydian Range & Dee Valley National Landscape, with its green slopes and tall cliffs. The Offa's Dyke Path is a short drive away for a long trot, too. Don't feel like you're limited to just the national landscape, though. From here, it's easy to reach Bala (45 minutes) on the edge of the Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park as well as Oswestry (half an hour), Ellesmere (35 minutes) and – if you really fancy seeing Britain's largest Roman amphitheatre or the Rows – Chester (50 minutes).
