Idyllic Woodland Pitches (added by manager 08 Aug 2022)
Secluded personal pitches
Our tent pitch, so separate from any other campers, felt very private
Our riverside pitch, under two great oaks, with ponies in the field on each side

  • Simple pitches on a peaceful 75-acre historic farm estate
  • Within the Snowdonia National Park, 10 minutes' drive from Dolgellau
  • Easy access to the Mawddach Trail and local walking/bike trails
Spacious pitches… seaside strolls… Snowdonia National Park… if such phrases fill your heart with glee, you should be pretty content at Cefn Coed. This spacious site is in a gorgeous Gwynedd location, within the national park and about 10 minutes’ drive from both the market town of Dolgellau and the coast at Fairbourne. If you’ve come to north Wales for the scenery, you should be pleased with your lot here: it’s in a sheltered valley of ancient oak woodlands, close to where the slopes of Cadair Idris roll down to the banks of the Mawddach Estuary. The site is part of a historic Welsh farm estate that now covers a splendid 75 acres of farmland and forest (if you want peace, this is the place – the nearest neighbours are almost a mile away). It’s also a fab spot to be in if you’re looking to get out and about: miles of walking, cycling and riding paths are easily accessible, including the famed Mawddach Trail (which you can follow all the way to Dolgellau, Fairbourne and Barmouth, or to a tiptop local pub/restaurant if you’re not feeling quite so energetic). Guests can also get out onto the circular route just above the property for some further viewpoints. Facilities on site include a facilities block with showers, toilets and a washing-up area. Water is available but must be boiled before consumption. The distance between the car parking and pitches is variable and parking by the pitch can't be guaranteed. Pitches are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis; if you have a particular request please let the site know and they'll do their best to accommodate you.

Oak Woodland primitive forest floor tent campsite

Liked: Gorgeous campsite. We had a woodland pitch and it felt very private, with 'wild' camping vibes. We had our 2 year old and he loved running around, splashing in puddles. The river and estuary is only a short walk away with amazing views. Very dog friendly. Pizza was delicious and cold drinks from the bar were just what we needed. Staff were lovely. Clean, basic facilities. We visited Barmouth beach abd Bala Lake, both about a 30 min drive from the campsite. Hope to visit again very soon!

Field primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Really friendly and welcoming. Camping field where you can pitch where you like rather than some sites where you're made to go where the campsite finds convenient. Beautiful views, lovely and quiet. Other campers were nice and civilised. We liked the bar and recycling facilities. Showers were decent enough. We'd definitely come again.

Disliked: Could do with a few more toilets, we were usually queueing for them. Maybe a compost toilet or two down the bottom would be good so you don't have to walk so far. Loved that we could buy food, but go easy on the salt!

Field primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Large site with a good selection of woodland or field pitches. The site is perfectly situated for many local things to do, with both Barmouth and Dolgellau worth visiting.

Disliked: Only 4 toilets, 2 dish washing and 3 showers for such a large site. There is quite a trek from the field pitches to the loo, don't leave it till the last minute folks. I selected stay again, but probably not in peak season

Field primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Spent 5 nights here as a couple with 2 kids and a dog. Can’t fault the accommodation of Cefn Coed. 7 minutes from the local town of Dolgellau. The on site shop has a lot of your amenities you need, along with the side bar which do amazing woodfried pizza nights. Located at the foot off the Mawddach Trail this place offered a full wild camping experience. We opted for the non electrical large tent pitch’s at the foot of the campsite, but would love to visit again and have one of their forest pitch’s for a fully immersed wild camping experience. The estuary is beautiful which leads up to the sea mouth over looking Barmouth. A truly stunning place and Adrian his daughter and communal offered a lot of local knowledge and helped us find key places for wild swims and waterfalls. Would definitely visit again.

Disliked: I only gave the WiFi a 1 star as I never really needed it nor did I know if there was any lol. Although this didn’t bother myself the communal showers and toilets weren’t a hit with the tribe for nothing more than comfortability. The lower tent picths for pegging was a bit of a challenge as we hit stone or slate of every attempt so I would just advise bringing a few extra pegs.

Local attractions

Ready to ramble? Take a wander around Abergwynant Woods, 20 minutes’ walk away, or get set to conquer Cadair Idris, the slopes of which you can reach on foot in a couple of hours. The New Precipice Walk (15 minutes’ drive) is a fab choice for spectacular views; if you’re more into moving at speed, make for the mountain bike trails at Coed-y-Brenin forest park (also 15 minutes). For less energetic days out, take fishing rods off to the banks of Cregennan Lakes (15 minutes) or Tal-y-llyn Lake (20 minutes) or make a break for the seaside at Fairbourne (10 minutes), where you can ride the heritage railway for a properly chilled-out time, or Barmouth (20 minutes). Keen to see what lies beneath? Take a boat ride into a world of subterranean dragons and the like at King Arthur’s Labyrinth (25 minutes). Back up in the daylight, ancient Cymer Abbey (10 minutes) and the fab Italianate village of Portmeirion (40 minutes) are top ports of call.
