  • Well-kept rural Denbighshire site raising money for charity
  • A 10-minute drive to the beaches of Rhyl and Prestatyn
  • Catering on site from Friday eve to Sunday morning
Want to book yourself a break and do some good for the world at the same time? What an excellent idea – and one that you can bring to reality when you stay at Pet Rescue Fundraising Camp Site, a five-acre site in the Denbighshire countryside just outside the village of Dyserth. Profits from stays here go towards funding animal rescue and care – so perhaps it’s no surprise that dogs are welcome to join you for a little holiday here. Doggy daycare is available for those who need it and all dogs will need to be kept on a lead and supervised at all times (and you’ll need proof of full vaccination too). This location makes a splendid spot for exploring north Wales – a cycle path runs past the entrance with a link to the North Wales Coastal Route, and there are plenty of walks around too. Rhyl and Prestatyn are both about 10 minutes’ drive away for beach times, and there are castles, gardens and all sorts of other things to fill days with. You’ll probably get a bit of a warm glow from knowing that you’re supporting a charitable cause by staying here – and that’s likely to grow even stronger when you see the facilities that have been provided. A washing-up area, toilets and showers are all included, and you can boost your break even further by hiring a firepit, grass heat shields (these are required for firepits or barbecues) or a windbreak. Logs can be purchased on site for the firepits. And that’s not all – there’s also a catering area that serves up cooked breakfasts, lunches, dinners and drinks (hot, cold and alcoholic) as well as running events like pizza nights and hotpot gatherings. The catering is open from Friday evening to Sunday morning breakfast.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Arrived to campsite later than planned due to long delays on motorway. Called to inform host. Host was accommodating and stayed on site to check us in. Nothing was too much trouble. We were greeted with a smile and a hot drink. Hooked us up on pitch with electrics within minutes after arriving. During our long Bank Holiday weekend, we had field mice visiting our pitch and seemed to have a preference for Gluten Free bread. We found the bread behind our tent next morning. Hmmm. Forgot to put food in box. Showers were hot, toilets clean and plenty of essential items on sale on the camp site. Organised recycling area. Washing up sink on site with running hot water. Burger van on site and tasty food served at certain times. Easy to find and great views. It was a lovely relaxed weekend, especially hearing alarm birds sing, at dusk. Child friendly. We felt at home. Another visit booked in August. Can't wait.

Disliked: Campsite is very close to busyish road.

Local attractions

Time to hit the coast? Take your bucket and spade to the sandy beaches of Rhyl or Prestatyn (both 10 minutes’ drive), get over to Llandudno (half an hour) to walk on the pier and ride the Great Orme tramway, or continue to Conwy (half an hour) to explore the castle. For rural walks you can stay local for the 15-minute stroll to Dyserth Falls, climb the peaks of the neighbouring Clwydian Range or dip your toes into Snowdonia National Park (40 minutes’ drive). The pretty pathways of Bodnant Garden (half an hour) are well worth a wander too. This being Wales, you’re never far from a castle – the turrets of Rhuddlan Castle (five minutes) are the closest, but TV fans may like to drop in at Gwrych Castle (15 minutes) to see where I’m A Celeb was staged.
