The cabins

  • Peaceful and well-maintained site on the edge of Clocaenog forest
  • A 15-minute drive from Llyn Brenig; 25 minutes from Betws-y-Coed
  • Modern site with easy access for large vehicles
Peace, quiet and woodland explores await at Parc Pen Y Bryn, a laidback, small-scale holiday park on the edge of Clocaenog forest. Some of north Wales' finest spots – like Llyn Brenig, Betws-y-Coed and Snowdonia National Park – are within easy reach of this niftily-located site. There's hardly a house to be seen at this secluded spot, where you can admire valley views and, in the distance, watch wind turbines turning slowly in the breeze. Well-placed outdoor furniture is on hand for those looking to sit in the open air and take it all in (perhaps, as per the site's pics, with a glass of vino). Parc Pen Y Bryn's top-notch hardstanding pitches make it simple for those travelling with tourers to roll up and relax. (The managers are also keen to point out that pesky narrow lanes won't get between you and your hols at this easily accessible site.) As well as that, the small number of pitches means there'll be ample room to roam at this spacious site, including for kids and dogs. The modern facilities aren't half bad either: the well-kept toilet and shower block can accommodate peeps who haven't brought their own. Those partial to cooking over coals can also set up a barbecue. Clawddnewydd, with its shop and community-run pub, is a 10-minute drive away (the site managers particularly recommend swinging by for Sunday lunch). The bigger town of Corwen on the river Dee is also close by (20 minutes).

Liked: We liked the small site and that it was quiet. Location also suited us (and our dogs) perfectly.

Disliked: The showers were quite cramped and you had to go outside the cubicle to get dressed so you could keep your clothes dry. One of the female showers had drainage problems so the water did not drain away, filling the shower tray and threatening to overflow.

Cabin (no pets)

Liked: Really good value. Pods are lovely, great views, well equipped. WiFi worked well and having a TV with Netflix on was great for a Movie Night. Loved the fire pit and the big field for ‘games’. Quite secluded, no pub or shop with walking distance. However the pods are so well equipped and comfortable we didn’t want to leave after a hard days hiking.

Liked: Clean bathrooms with showers, kitchen for washing etc. Fresh spring water from tap, fire pits to use, freshly cut logs to buy (honesty box), scenery is beautiful and owners are friendly and welcoming. Will definitely be returning, we were only originally booked for one night as a stop over and ended up staying for two!

Liked: The site is amazing! Absolutely perfect for us in every way. Facilities are great, clean and well placed. The owner is friendly and available and regularly checks everything is fine and whether you need anything. The pitches are level and all hardstanding. It is an idyllic small site with outstanding views all around you. You are enveloped in wonderful, peaceful greenery. The site is well placed to visits some beautiful North Wales areas, eg, Conwy, Betws-y-Coed, Harlech, Porthmadog and Llandudno, to name a few. There are some lovely local pubs offering fantastic food and drink. We will most definitely be back again!

Disliked: Nothing to dislike!

Liked: Pitches were good sizes, toilets and showers were clean and warm, kitchen facilities were handy and fresh water tap also available. Located in peaceful forest countryside. Lovely little site perfect for short breaks. Nice and peaceful in the countryside with forest walk (a bit tricky) or roadside walk to the pub about 40mins away. The site facilities were handy and clean. Small site with around a dozen pitches made it the perfect relaxing setting. Logs and kindling available to buy and some camp fires available to use too. Electric hookup was perfect for our little heater when it rained. Even the bin area was kept tidy and organised. We like to pitch up and stay out or walk and it was perfect for this for us. Other campers all seemed friendly and considerate to one another too. Would definitely visit again.

Disliked: Nothing

Local attractions

Llyn Brenig (15 minutes' drive) is likely to prove popular with experienced fishing fans – the trout here spend their whole life in cold Welsh water, so they're hardier than most and have something of a feisty reputation. There's also bike hire available and six varied lakeside trails to choose from. Betws-y-Coed (25 minutes) is a hub for train fans, who can contentedly chug along on the Conwy Valley narrow-gauge railway. (The mainline station also backs right onto a range of cafés, restaurants and shops, one of which is housed in a converted carriage.) A short walk outside the town are the Swallow Falls, where you can watch the Llugwy foaming over the rugged rocks. Want to use your time in north Wales to delve into the country's industrial past? The fably laid out (and free to enter) National Slate Museum (an hour) will be the one for you. While you're here, make sure to visit Clocaenog Forest (five minutes), where miles of walking and cycling trails are waiting to be explored. Peaceful woodlands, heather moorland, streams, waterfalls and lots of wildlife (including red squirrels, crossbills, black grouse and wild horses) are just some of the things to look out for here
